The manual says that the maximum size of theM.2 drive is 512GB. is 512GB the real maximum or just as big as they had at the time the manual was printed?

Hi:
The SATA M.2 drive capacities that are listed in the manual are just what HP offered in the model series.
You should be able to go up to 1 TB with no problem, but I would definitely check to make sure your notebook has a M.2 slot before buying a SATA M.2 drive.
On many HP notebooks with the older processors such as yours, where M.2 drives are listed, the only models that had M.2 slots were the ones that came with the MM.2 drives from the factory.

There is no Crucial memory report for your model notebook but there is one for the very similar m7-n011dx, and as you can see Crucial does not list any M.2 SATA drives for sale.
