Hi
can anyone help I want to upgrade the emmc storage to an SSD, I can see the motherboard has a M.2 slot but am unsure what to buy. I've checked the manual and apparently this will take PCIe which would as far as I'm aware be far superior than SSD I can also see that there appears to be a size limit of 500GB. What I cant get my head around is the length required to fit
The manual states length 50.8 mm Width 50.8 mm. But I cant find any PCIe SSD's of that length
The more I read online the more confused I get
Thanks in advance for any help
Rob

Hi:
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.
Chapter 1 has the supported drive types.
The M.2 slot only supports SATA M.2 SSD's, not NVMe.
I am also very surprised that your notebook has a M.2 slot as well as an eMMC drive.
Usually, notebooks that have eMMC drives do not have any storage upgrade options.
If you google the part numbers for any of the M.2 drives listed in chapter 3 of the service manual, they are the standard 2280 size.
I hope the M.2 slot your notebook has is active.

Hi Paul
Thanks for getting back to me as I'm struggling, I'm aware that the emmc storage is usually soldered but this isn't. I believed I needed an emmc - SSD cable but couldn't find one as I only had the HP 14 Laptop Service Manual not the HP 14s
Earlier today I contacted HP support via Facebook Messenger for assistance, it was them that could not help regard's the emmc to SSD adapter but told me to use the M2 port. I tried ringing 020 7660 0596 for support but no one answered
The port on the board looks like M key where as all the SSD's that I looked at that were not PCIe looked like B+M
But now your saying the port might not work ?
If it helps the board number is DAG71MB 16DO REV D

You're very welcome.
All the M.2 slots that I know of look like they will fit a NVMe drive, but you have to look at the service manual to see what the slot actually supports.
Some support NVMe + SATA, some support NVMe only, and some support SATA only.
I don't know of any HP notebook where the slot has two keys that would only accommodate a SATA drive.
Too bad you don't have a SATA M.2 drive you can just plug in there and see what happens.
If the M.2 slot is on the board from the factory, normally no additional parts are needed.
Unfortunately, that would be all the information I can provide.

Thanks for your time Paul. I got the information from the HP 14 manual and assumed it covered all HP 14's. I think the easiest solution is to buy an SSD on Amazon and see what happens.
Between looking online, phoning and using HP support I've spent a good eight hours on this and my heads buzzing
Thanks again
Rob

Hi Paul
The M.2 SDD worked a treat I only bought a 500GB as to my eyes that's what the service manual stated was the maximum
Can I ask one last question as the manual isn't clear ? Is it best to now remove the emmc storage or can I wipe and use as extra storage ? I'm guessing the limits on HDD speed and hard drive size is so as not to overload the motherboard ?

Hi, Rob:
That is great news!
You could format the eMMC drive and just use it for storage, or if it is easy to remove the setup from the motherboard, you could do that too. Only you know how easy or difficult that would be.
The eMMC drive wouldn't slow down the SSD because it uses a different storage controller but it would be wasting a tiny bit of battery power.
