HP 17-x051nr
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I tried to install memory that I purchased and had a problem. I have a Model Number: HP 17-x051nr Product Number: W2M98UA#ABA [serial number removed]. I had 6 GB of factory installed memory (1x4 and 1x2) originally. I wanted to upgrade to the maximum this machine would allow which is 16GB. When I install the two 8GB sticks the laptop won’t start (blank screen). It will start when I install just one (I tried this with both) and a blank slot. It will also start with one – 8GB stick and the original 4GB (for a total of 12GB). When I test these combinations with a utility, they do show up correctly and when I scanned the laptop on the Crucial site it confirms that. It also confirms that the max is 16 GB and it offers two 8 GB sticks as an upgrade option that they guarantee will work. I need to get this resolved. This appears to be a problem with the laptop. I have the latest BIOS software installed - Brand:Insyde Version:F.31 Date:10/23/2018

Windows10 Pro 64 bit – all windows updates are installed – all recommended drivers are the latest that are offered by HP. When I try to install both sitcks (all 16 GB) and the screen goes blank on startup, the Caps Lock key blinks 3 long delay and 2 short. There are no other error codes or messages.

I have tried to solve this problem by searching online, including the HP Community and can’t find the solution. The warranty on the laptop is expired and they want me to pay $49.99 for service to investigate the issue online. That’s not going to happen! Not just to gain an additional 4 GB of memory. Is there anything you can do to help me on this issue?

@wmgmick , welcome back to the forum.

If I am reading your post correctly, you bought the new memory from Crucial.  If this is correct, have you contacted their Tech Support to see what they have to say?  As you stated, they guaranty the memory they recommend to work.

Thanks for your reply old_geekster. Unfortunately I tookthe cheaper route and purchased the sticks from a ebay merchant who I have bought from before. They have treated me very well in the past and have a great reputation.  They have agreed to take them back if I can't solve the problem. I could then get them from Crucial but I have the feeling the problem is with the laptop and not the sticks; so I'll just be back to the same situation I have now. I just used the Crucial website scanner to try to trouble shoot the problem to no avail. If you have any other suggestions I'd love to hear back from you or anyone else before I return them.

You are very welcome, @wmgmick !

Even though you didn't buy the memory from Crucial, they still have always been very helpful.  They are one of the largest memory manufacturers (Micron) and usually have a good feel for the problems that happen with their memory.

I have seen this type of problem several times on the Forums.  I know that I had a motherboard that would only allow 2 sticks to work out of 4.  I never did solve that problem with the help of some of the best minds.
