Microsoft Windows 11

I have a HP 17-by4061nr. It came shipped with 8mb of ram on 2 4mb chips. Is this ram expandable? If so what is the maximum Ram the PC can handle? What type of chips are used?

Thanks you for some help

Jim

Hi, Jim:

Unfortunately, HP only has the service manual for the older models in that series on your notebook's support page.

According to chapter 1 of that manual, there are two memory slots and you can install up to 2 x 8 GB of memory.

You can do this to confirm how much memory your notebook can support...

1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.

This will open the command prompt.

2. Once command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and hit enter.

There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.

The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.

If the report indicates you can install 32 GB of memory, this would be a compatible 16 GB memory chip.

If the report indicates you can install 16 GB of memory, or that's all you want to install, then this would be a compatible 8 GB memory chip you can replace the 2 x 4 GB memory chips with.
