Hi Promariner,
Yes, you hit all the key points directly on target, including HP's own indefensible, and fraudulent, behavior.
Despite that you bought a different model (17-ak012) than me (17-u273cl), the fact pattern remains the same: HP explicitly **LIED** in its own Service Manuals by stating that PCIe-NVMe drives were supported for these two models, when, in fact those laptops DO NOT INCLUDE a M.2 Header on the motherboard!
I had published the exact link to my Service Manual for my EXACT model (17-u273cl) earlier in this thread, which EXPLICITLY STATED SUPPORT FOR PCIe-NVMe SSD drives.
Please publish the exact link to your Service Manual, with the correct SSD support page number for your EXACT model (17-ak012) so we can further document HP's outright, and EXPLICITLY PUBLISHED, FRAUD!!!
However, despite HP's PUBLISHED FRAUD, the final slap in face from the HP Support Community is to be told: you can only tell if your laptop supports PCIe-NVMe SSDs is by opening it up AFTER PURCHASE!!!
A few points to note:
1. Opening up any modern laptop, specifically in this case, to determine whether PCIe-NVMe SSDs are supported, is FAR BEYOND the technical skill of the average laptop user.
2. Most new laptops include a similar warranty disclaimer: If the purchaser opens the laptop, the warranty is immediately voided. In fact, many OEMs cover key (and necessary) removal 'screws' with paper labels to provide evidence of 'user' case tampering resulting in a voided warranty, despite that the 'user' now OWNS the laptop, and NOT the OEM any longer!!
3. Even if a potential BUYER relied 100% on HP's own (the SELLER), PUBLISHED, FRAUDULENT documentation that a specific model supported PCIe-NVMe SSDs, only to have the BUYER **AFTER PURCHASE AND LAPTOP BOTTOM CASE REMOVAL** discover that what he/she HAD PURCHASED DOES **NOT SUPPORT** PCIe-NVMe SSDs is PURE 100%, OUTRIGHT, PREMEDITATED, CRIMINAL FRAUD!!!
Period.
I am very sorry to learn that you ALSO TRUSTED HP, BASED ON RESEARCH OF HP's OWN DOCUMENTATION, PRIOR TO YOUR PURCHASE, JUSTLIKE ME, BUT STILL GOT SOLD A FRAUDULENT PRODUCT FROM AND BY HP, JUST LIKE ME!!!
Who would have EVER thought that HP would EVER treat it own (and its own POTENTIAL) CUSTOMERS in such a FRAUDULENT manner?
HP's (now) documented BEHAVIOR toward its CUSTOMERS is DESPICABLE and UNFORGIVABLE!!!
For the sake of **everyone else**, let's keep digging into this issue...

To be fair, in my laptop specific manual, my motherboard can only support SATA 3 SSD's. I wanted to upgrade my computer anyway, and the manual specifically lists that I can use an M2 SATA 3 SSD, when combined with the 5400 HDD.
I'm replying on my phone, so I can't include the exact link in the manual, but anybody who is curious could download the manual from HP, and see the reference pages, including the simple instructions to install the M2 drive. Too bad that the M2 header slot wasn't soldered in, and I discovered this only after I purchased the M2 drive. At the "Crucial.com" website, I used their software that detected my computer specs, so that only compatible products (memory and SSD) were listed. The Crucial site said that the M2 SSD was compatible. This info, when combined with my owners manual, should have been sufficient to make a purchase. I never thought to open up the laptop first.
Anyway, I bought another 2.5 inch SSD, and cloned it with Macrium software. The new SATA SSD works great, all by itself. As for the other M2 drive, I've been looking at a drive enclosure that fits in the DVD drive drive slot. That would allow me to have two SSD drives in the computer at the same time. I can cheaply buy an external DVD drive for the rare times that I would need to read or burn a CD or DVD.
I hope HP reads these comments. THE MANUAL SHOULD ALWAYS MATCH THE PRODUCT. HP cost me @ $120 - and I won't forget this mess when I purchese my next computer.

hello, I am also disappointed, all instructions, not one but a few, as well as internet machines recognizing the configuration of my laptop, pointed to support for M.2 drives. I even called the HP service center, and the consultant was surprised that there was no M.2 slot installed.
I asked in the HP service center where I can get the M.2 slot assembly service. the man gave me a phone number for several computer services, none of them will undertake to solve the problem.
HP, be honest!
