Recently I've been having troubles with the touchpad on my laptop. My issue was that the mouse was working, left and right clicks were working, however the multi-finger controls (two-finger swipe, three-finger backwards and forwards, etc.) were not working. I tried looking through help forums, updated my drivers, uninstalled then re-installed the drivers...nothing would fix the issue. So I gave up because everything else was working fine.

However, today I opened up my laptop to clean out the fan (completely unrelated-just wanted to clean out a bit of dust-at least I hope) and I swap out a 2gb ram for 4gb ram (totaling 8gb). I put everything back together just fine, but when I turned my laptop back on, my mouse/touchpad and left and right clicks are not working. I have read related posts in the forums and followed their advice-such as installing the driver software and restarting my laptop, but to no avail.

I have tried drivers sp61880 and sp52352. Neither of these worked; after installing them and restarting my laptop, the drivers did not show up under Devices & Printers>Mouse OR Devices & Printers>Device Manager. I uninstalled them after I realized they were not working.

I cannot go in and update the mouse driver because there is currently nothing to update. It simply is not there.

Can anyone help me figure out what the issue might be? Hopefully without having to system restore my laptop.

Hi @laci_ann92,

Good Day.  Thank you for posting your query in the HP community.  I read the post regarding issues with the touchpad and mouse after upgrading the ram modules on the computer. I will be delighted to assist you here.

Superb description and spectacular troubleshooting and commendable diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this:

  • Did you try to swap back the original RAM with the ones that you upgraded and check if that works?
  • Did you try to completely uninstall the touchpad and mouse drivers from the device manager and reinstall it from the HP support site?
  • Please let me know the complete model# of the computer with the operating system installed to assist you better.

For now please try these steps:

  • Please go to device manager.
  • Then under Mice and other point devices right click on all the listed options one at a time and left click on uninstall.
  • Also for the option that says Synaptics SMBus TouchPad right click on it, left click on uninstall and check the box that says delete the software for this device.

  • Then restart the computer and update the bios, chipset and synaptics touchpad driver from drivers: http://hp.care/2syreDe  and check if the issue gets resolved.
  • If it does not please run hardware diagnostics on the touchpad from outside of windows from http://hp.care/2sZtJzF  to eliminate hardware issues with the touchpad. Please run the UEFI component tests for the touchpad.
  • If the diagnostics for the touchpad fail then it is a hardware issue and it needs to be replaced to the computer serviced by contacting HP phone support via this link: http://hp.care/2moMFSc and following the on-screen instructions. Please make a note of the failure code that shows up. They will be happy to assist you immediately. If the unit is under warranty repair services is taken care of by the manufacturer’s warranty
  • If diagnostics pass, then a Microsoft push button reset from here http://hp.care/2tz94m9  will fix the issue without causing data loss.

Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, Going by your technical expertise and competence I am sure you will be able to perform these steps without breaking a sweat. 🙂

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as Accepted Solution as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care and have a blessed week ahead. 🙂

Cheers!

Hello! I had this exact problem today. I went in to clean out my HP Omen 15 laptop, as well as check out a fan error (I need a new fan =__=). When I put everything back together, my touchpad wasn't working! What happened for me was there was a little switch thing I had bumped. Next to the things that says "Replace with HP" something something in the image: switchimage.jpg

I don't usually dabble in hardware, so I had accidentally flipped it up. It needs to be down. Open your PC back up and see if you accidentally flipped any one of these up. I hope this helps someone!
