We need the full model number to help you find the part if that becomes necessary. But first try a cleaner disk you can get at a music store and then there are software fixes to the registry that work sometimes. The best way to diagnose whether the problem is software or hardware is to try booting the system from a bootable CD or DVD such as a Windows install disk. You are not going to actually install anything so it can be an old one from an earlier OS if you have one laying around. Do you get any kind of error message when you try to read a CD or DVD? Is there any kind of negative entry in the Device Manager?
