Pavillion n047cl
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My old charger recently broke down during a thunderstorm. So I bought a new charger for my laptop and it also broke down within a week. When it broke down the circuit breaker tripped but only in the room where the laptop was plugged in. It was a perfectly fine day and there weren't any thunder storms. I checked whether the charger is working after removing the battery as guided in this troubleshoot guide https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/tech-takes/how-to-fix-laptop-that-wont-charge . But it didn't work. The laptop was working after the charger died until the battery drained out. What might be causing this?

Welcome to the HP Community.

Possible causes might include and not be limited to:

  • Bad wall outlet - damaged or otherwise not able to perform as expected.
  • Bad wiring in the wall - damaged or perhaps not the right gauge to handle the load placed on it.
  • Damaged battery - Two damaged chargers means the battery could have been damaged along the way.
  • Bad replacement charger - not all chargers are the same - the replacement might have been defective or otherwise not acceptable in some way.
  • Bad power cord (see notice later in this message to find whether your power cord is affected).

The battery, now having drained completely, is NOT likely to recover (be able to be charged ever again).

You'll need both battery and charger, I think.

See the note regarding the power cord.

Were it me and if I had the means to do so, I'd consider having that wall outlet and wiring checked.

Additionally, consider a surge protector (a decent model and not the cheapest you can buy).

Note about surge protectors and battery backup units

Any surge protector or battery backup unit must fit the need.

This is one of those areas where you "get what you pay for".  Cheap is not best and perhaps not even "good enough".

Read, search, and learn about the subject.

This "brief note" is not enough to teach you what you need to know.

The Bare Basics

The protection must allow the maximum power normally provided by a working outlet configured for the load provided / supported in your region.

What?  Printers and computers, in particular, draw a lot of power sometimes - that power must "be there" or the device might disconnect, switch off, or suffer other indignities.

Ideally, any protector, be it a surge protector or a battery backup unit, (that) you place on your network / devices will also protect against "low voltage", that is, a drop in the amount of electricity provided at the outlet.   Devices that provide this level of protection are more expensive.

If you live in a region where power changes, drops, surges, or is unreliable, consider adding protection for your devices.
