Hi @Mdwatkins,
Good Day!! Thanks for taking an interest in the HP Support Forums. I reviewed the post about having to replace the hard drive on the computer as it is not getting detected. It will be a delight to assist you.
Spectacular understanding and commendable description of the issue before posting. Kudos to you on that score. You are a valued HP customer and it is paramount to assist you here. I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you.
For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this:
- How old is the computer?
- Please provide the complete mode# or product# of the unit so that I could let you know the exact specifications of the computer for you to either buy a new hard drive or get it replaced by HP if the computer is under warranty.
- Did you run diagnostics on the computer for it to report that the hard drive has failed?
- Did this happen after a windows or software update?
Please keep me posted and I will be more than happy to assist you with this.
Hope this helps. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. Please reach out for any issues and I'll always be there to assist you.

I recently updated my bios via the HP firmware download for a HP Laptop. This was the following info;
Type: BIOS
Version: F.39 Rev.A
Operating systems: Windows 10 (64-bit)
Release date: Apr 21, 2017
File name: sp79620.exe (9.1 MB)
Description:
This package provides an update to the System BIOS. The update installs on supported notebook models using a supported Microsoft Windows Operating System. It is necessary to restart the system to complete the installation.
Fix and enhancements:
NOTE: HP strongly recommends transitioning promptly to this updated BIOS version which supersedes all previous releases.
