My laptop shuts down suddenly when battery percentage around 80% or 85% without any warning. I have to restart my laptop again with ac adapter plugged in and I replaced with new battery 10 months ago. I think it's not the battery problem. Please help me with this issue.

Hi @Kuroi_Kenshi,

My laptop is

HP Notebook - 15g-dr0006tx

bought in 2019 and I replaced the battery  1 year ago. I feel laptop battery is working properly but I don't know why it shuts down suddenly near at 90% now. I have reset my laptop but still issue persist.

Hi @AmbarishMB,

Thank you for sharing your model information.

the HP Notebook 15g-dr0006tx.
If your laptop shuts down suddenly around 80–90% battery, even after replacing the battery, this usually indicates a battery calibration or power delivery issue, not the battery capacity itself. Let’s go through a few steps to fix it.

Perform a Battery Hard Reset (EC Reset)

Shut down the laptop.

Disconnect the charger.

Press and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds.

Reconnect the charger and turn it on normally.

This resets the power controller, which often fixes this symptom.

Recalibrate the Battery

This helps the laptop read the battery percentage correctly.

Charge your laptop to 100%.

Once full, keep it plugged in for 1 additional hour.

Now unplug the charger and let it drain the battery until it shuts down automatically.

Do not use Sleep/Hibernate — just allow it to power off naturally.

After it shuts down, plug in the charger and charge to 100% without interruption.

Update BIOS & Power Drivers

Go to the HP website → Support page for HP 15g-dr0006tx
Install in this order:

BIOS Update

Intel Chipset Driver

Intel Dynamic Platform & Thermal Framework

HP System Event Utility

Restart after installation.

Test the Battery Using HP Diagnostics

Turn the laptop off.

Press Esc repeatedly → then press F2 (System Diagnostics).

Choose: Component Tests → Power → Battery Test

• If it shows Calibration Required, redo Step 2
• If it shows Failed, the battery may be faulty even if new.

I hope this helps.

Hi @Kuroi_Kenshi,

Thank you for your detailed suggestions and for taking the time to help.

I followed all the steps you mentioned for my HP Notebook 15g-dr0006tx:

  • Performed the battery hard reset (EC reset)

  • Tried recalibrating the battery

  • Updated BIOS and relevant drivers from the HP support page

  • Ran the HP Diagnostics battery test

However, the issue still persists. The laptop continues to shut down suddenly around 80–90% battery. Even during the recalibration process, it powers off at around 90%, and I have to plug in the charger and restart it, so I’m not able to complete a proper full discharge cycle.

Additionally, I have reset Windows on my laptop, but that also didn’t resolve the battery problem. After the reset, I started facing a new issue with the touchpad — it’s not working properly now. I’m unable to scroll using the touchpad and have to use an external mouse for almost everything, which was not the case before the reset.

Battery Report

Could you please suggest what I should do next? Is this likely a hardware issue with the battery or motherboard, and should I visit an HP service center for further diagnosis?

Thank you again for your support.

Best regards,
Ambarish

Hi @AmbarishMB,

Thank you for getting back to me and for performing all the steps so thoroughly. I appreciate the detailed update — it really helps narrow down the cause of the issue.

Based on everything you’ve tried so far, here’s what your results indicate:

Since:

The laptop still shuts down suddenly at 80–90%

The system does not allow a full discharge cycle

HP Diagnostics did not show improvement

A replaced battery (only ~1 year old) behaves the same way

This strongly suggests the issue is not the battery, but the power delivery hardware, such as:

Likely Causes

Faulty DC-in / power circuitry on the motherboard

Faulty battery connector or charging IC

Thermal or power protection triggering incorrectly

This type of sudden power-off at high battery percentage is classic behavior of a failing system board power controller, not a battery calibration problem.

At this point, the next step is a hardware-level inspection.
