Hi @Taugodgg,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
When an HP laptop screen goes black, it could be due to various causes like display issues, power problems, or issues with the graphics card. Here are steps to troubleshoot and fix it yourself.
Check Power Supply
- Ensure your laptop is plugged in properly, and the charger is working.
- Try a different power outlet or check if the charging light on the laptop is on.
Hard Reset the Laptop
- For laptops with a removable battery:
- Shut down the laptop and remove the battery.
- Disconnect the power cord.
- Hold the power button for about 15-20 seconds to drain residual charge.
- Reconnect the battery and power cord, and try turning it on.
- For laptops without a removable battery:
- Hold the power button down for about 15-20 seconds to force a shutdown.
- After the shutdown, press the power button again to restart.
Test the Display
- Try connecting the laptop to an external monitor or TV using an HDMI or VGA cable. If the external display works, it could indicate an issue with the laptop's internal display or its cable connections.
- If nothing shows up on the external display, the issue could be with the graphics card or other internal components.
Reseat the RAM
- Sometimes, a loose RAM module can cause the display to go black. Here’s how to fix it:
- Shut down the laptop and disconnect the power.
- Open the back panel (refer to your specific laptop's manual or search online for a guide for your model).
- Locate the RAM sticks, unclip them, and reinsert them securely.
- Close the panel and turn the laptop back on.
Where to Locate the Graphics Card
- On most laptops, the graphics card (GPU) is integrated into the motherboard or with the processor, especially in non-gaming or lower-end models.
- If your HP laptop has a dedicated GPU (e.g., NVIDIA or AMD), it will be soldered to the motherboard, and you can't replace or reseat it easily without specialized equipment.

BIOS or Safe Mode Check
- If the screen remains black, try booting into BIOS by pressing the F10 key (or Esc, depending on your model) when powering on the laptop.
- If BIOS loads, the problem may be with your operating system or drivers.
- You can also try booting into Safe Mode by pressing F8 or Shift + F8 during startup.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
