My mousepad has started to lift frequently. The mousepad still works fine, and I haven't noticed any differences in the battery life, but the entire front edge of the mousepad has lifted. I have had the laptop for a little over a year and haven't dropped or otherwise damaged the laptop.

Hi @PhilippMeyer,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
A lifting mousepad (trackpad) on your HP laptop, especially when the device is just over a year old and hasn’t been dropped, is a serious warning sign, even if everything else seems to be working fine.
Most Likely Cause: Battery Swelling
What you’re describing, the front edge of the trackpad lifting, is a classic symptom of a swollen internal battery. Even if:
- The battery life seems normal
- The laptop hasn’t overheated
- The trackpad still works
...a swollen battery can physically push against the trackpad from underneath, causing it to lift. This is a safety hazard and should be addressed immediately.
What You Should Do Next
1. Stop Using the Laptop on Charge Continuously
If you often keep it plugged in, try to unplug it when fully charged. But do not delay inspection.
2. Check for Battery Swelling
If you feel comfortable:
- Power off the laptop.
- Gently press around the trackpad area. If it feels raised, soft, or uneven, it’s likely the battery underneath is expanding.
⚠️ Do not puncture or press hard on swollen lithium-ion batteries can be dangerous.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
