HP ENVY x360 Laptop - 15z-ee000 CTO

The Laptop is on! I can hear the hard disk etc. but the screen stays black!

If I connect an HDMI cable the external screens gives me a black screen also.

I have tried starting the laptop and pressing the ESC key at the same time, then I got a message on the Screen:

ESC...Pause Startup

This appears to tell me that the motherboard or BIOS is probably dead! SO this may explains why the hard disk is not booting and turning for no reasons!

What else can I try?

How can I start my laptop with an SD card or other means to verify this. Or I just replace the SSD ? or ?

Hi @Fil,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I see that you are facing black screen issues with your HP ENVY X360 Laptop - 15z-Ee000 CTO.

Please follow the steps listed below for BIOS recovery:

1. Turn off the computer and keep the power adapter plugged in.

2. Press and hold the Windows key and the B key at the same time, and then press and hold the power button for 2 to 3 seconds.

3. Release the Power button but continue pressing the Windows and B keys. You might hear a series of beeps.

4. The HP BIOS Update screen displays, and the recovery begins automatically. Follow any on-screen prompts to continue the start up to complete the recovery.

Hi Thank you for this rapid answer.

Sadly it did not resolve the issu:

1. Turn off the computer and keep the power adapter plugged in. - DONE!

2. Press and hold the Windows key and the B key at the same time, and then press and hold the power button for 2 to 3 seconds. - DONE (Multiple Times...)

3. Release the Power button but continue pressing the Windows and B keys. You might hear a series of beeps. - Done and NO BEEPS

The rest of the instruction I could not perform since I did not get the HP BIOS screen displays!

4. The HP BIOS Update screen displays, and the recovery begins automatically. Follow any on-screen prompts to continue the start up to complete the recovery.

Postmortem!

I finally brought the Laptop to a service center! The SSD harddisk was totally dead! They could not read anything from it!

I got it replaced and I am now in the process of reinstalling EVERY piece of software...

Now I wish I had used a BACKUP software.. it would have saved me a Ton of time!

Side note! Is it normal that an SSD drive last only 2 years?

They are usually pretty reliable, biggest problem seems to be how much was writtewn to it during it's life. I've had a few fail on me while rather new, though. Good news is you are on the way to getting back up.

Backup is the most important task you can do.  Ask yourself can you afford to lose the data on your laptop.
