Hp compaq nc6400
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)
Hello.
I want to ask few questions about HP compaq nc6400, and It will be great to get back message.
1. Is it possible to upgrade hp compaq nc6400 processor to newer one? Well, that message was old, so I tought to ask everything again, if it is possible.
Yes, I deside to use T9400, but I want to know, if it is possible to use this processor type now, or still nothing changed.
2. I am using windows 8.1 now, and I have some errors also, like, can't run some programms e.c. I also have something wrong with network troubleshooting. When I run it, some programm stopped working, and, to resolve internet issue, I disable and enable driver many times, or restart Pc and hope, that it can resolve issue. Everything is workibg fine only that 2 issues and some CPU issues. If there are some drivers for network, I will be glad to get them.
3. By the way my charger wasnt good enough so that just slow down my PC at very laggy level... But still thanks for helping.

Write soon.

Hi:

The T9400 might fit in the socket, but that is not enough.

Here is a side by side comparison of the two processors (T7600/T9400).

https://ark.intel.com/compare/35562,27257

As you can see, they are totally different in FSB speed, and lithography.

The main issue is the FSB speed.

The nc6400 has a Mobile Intel 945 chipset and that can only run processors with a maximum of a 667 MHz FSB speed.

So, if you install a T9400 in there, the PC will not work.

Wireless card:

See if this W7 driver helps the wifi card to work better.  The first driver at the top left side of the page is for 64 bit.

This driver will not install the latest version listed.

Hi:

The best processor you can install in the nc6400 is the T7600.

There is only operating system support for Windows 2000 to Windows Vista.

What model wifi card does your notebook come with?  Some have Broadcom, but most have the Intel 3945 wireless cards.

Wow, yes. I see...
Oh Paul, so, what about T7700? Looks like u will also say I cant use it as processor because it has different MHz speed. So... Everything means, my processor need to be not more or not less than 667MHz. Am I right Paul?
HP Recommended

That is correct.

The T7700 has an 800 MHz FSB speed, and therefore will not work.

The T7600 is the best you can do.

Aha. Thanks Paul... Well I want to ask you also something else...
Well, battery is broked yesterday I think. 2 days ago everything was fine, but now I see message like this "Plugged in, charging, but battery have 0%". Looks like it is dead 😞
Paul, by the way ...
Is there any improvements for this model, like changing something, or do something? Well, it isnt working perfect, but, Is there also way to keep it stable? Mabye windows xp can help? I have Windows 8.1 now, but, mabye I must to use XP, or, just change something. I am waiting for charger now, what eill improve performance.
I am very confused now Paul, so, I will do, what u will say to me.

You're very welcome.

Unfortunately, I would have no idea about the battery charging issue.  I am not a PC repair tech by trade or training.

The battery is probably no good anymore--especially if it is the original one.  The notebook is over 10 years old now.

Operating systems...I have run every Windows OS on my nc6400 from Windows 2000 through Windows 10.

To have everything work right on the PC, W7 is probably the best overall choice, but I don't use the fingerprint sensor, so W10 works fine for me.

The problem with W2K or XP is that so many internet things don't work right anymore.  Internet Explorer is no good, so you have to use Firefox.  No antivirus support.  You have to try several different antivirus programs until you find one that works.  No Microsoft security updates...

I installed a 120 GB Intel 535 SSD in my nc6400 because I was able to get one for only $60.00.

That sped things up pretty nice.

I was surprised that it worked.  Other folks have installed different model SSD's in their nc6400's with various results--most not good.

The only other thing I can recommend if you have not done so already, would be to max out the memory to 2 x 2 GB of PC2-6400 or PC2-5300 memory, and make sure that SATA Native Mode is enabled in the BIOS for best hard drive performance.

You would have to reinstall Windows in most cases if the SATA Native Mode setting is disabled, and you have to enable it.

Hi:

I recommend you remove the 1 GB memory chip and install a 2 GB chip so the memory runs in DDR (dual data rate) mode for best performance.  You won't get 4 GB usable memory, but the PC's memory will perform at its best.

With a 2 GB + 1 GB chip, the memory is only running in SDR (single data rate) mode.

I can't recommend any SSD's other than the Intel 535, which I have confirmed works.

Any others I have no feedback on.  Other forum members have used Samsung, PNY, Sandisk, and had mixed results from not working at all, to only 10 GB of the hard drive showing up.

The 535 works perfectly in all respects.
