Hi,
I know that my model of computer can accept an M.2 drive because I can find the information in the manual, found here : http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05485598.
The issue I'm having is that (after purchasing an M.2 SSD 2280, and taking apart the computer) the socket appears to be missing, and I can't find it anywhere. I don't know the part number, what it is called, or anything. Please forgive my ignorance. I have a picture of exactly what my motherboard looks like with the space where it goes circled.
I need help with what I need to install the SSD. I don't even know what it is called though. I ordered the SSD cable through HP parts, but it will not be shipped until January, and now I don't think I even need that.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you in advance!

Yes this is unfortunately common and really common on "xxxWM" Wal-Mart models. Theoretically an M.2 connector housing assembly could be attached to those traces circled in red but it is super brain surgery soldering and one would have to have expensive equipment and mad skills. I have never heard of anyone doing it. You are not going to get an M.2 disk working with that motherboard in that place quite the way you thought. Your option is to use a 2.5 inch SATA SSD in lieu of the regular hard drive. There is also an adapter board to place an M.2 disk in the hard drive bay with a caddy and cable so do not cancel the order for that cable as you may need it.
The solid-state drive spare part kit does not include the solid-state drive cable, solid-state drive converter board, or solid-state drive holder. The solid-state drive cable is available using spare part number 933617-001. The solid-state drive converter board is available using spare part number 926901-001. The solid-state drive holder is available using spare part number 926902-001.
The Manual does clarify that the dual storage option is only found on certain models
Support for the following dual-storage Configurations (available only on computer models equipped with an AMD A9-9420P processor) 1-TB, 5400-rpm, 9.5-/7.2-mm hard drive + 256-GB, M.2 SATA-3 solid-state drive
