Thinking about buying HP Pavilion 15-cs2039na laptop, which has 1x8GB memory as standard.
Can anyone tell me if the memory can be upgraded to 16GB?
More generally, how do I find out about maximum RAM on other laptops?

Hi:
The Crucial memory report for your model indicates that you can install 2 x 16 GB of memory.
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook. Chapter 1 has the memory upgrade info.

HP says the max is 2 x 8 GB but Crucial is almost always right with their info.

You're very welcome.
I have never attempted to take apart any of these newer type notebooks that have no access panels to the memory, wifi card or hard drive.
So, I agree with you...could be tricky. Many of them have screws hidden underneath the rubber feet and whatnot.
Buy a set of notebook pry tools to help prevent marring and scratching the plastic when prying the bottom cover off after you remove the screws.
