That is 100% correct.

You may as well buy the faster drive in case the slot is PCIe Gen 4.

Hi:

Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.

Maintenance and Service Guide (hp.com)

Chapter 1 has the supported drive configurations.

The primary memory slot is PCIe Gen 4.0.

I'd install a Samsung 990 Pro in the primary slot.

I'm not sure if the secondary slot is PCIe 4.0 or 3.0.

It could be 3.0.

what's the difference between gen 4.0 annd 3.0? also does the capacity matter of the sdd?

HP Recommended

When the NVMe SSD slot supports Gen 4 NVMe SSD's they have faster read/write speeds than Gen 3 SSD's have.

You can look up the specs for any SSD you are interested in buying.

As long as the drive is single-sided (memory chips on only one side of the circuit board), you should be able to install any capacity NVMe SSD you want.

For example, the Crucial SSD report indicates that they sell SSD's up to 4 TB for your notebook:

so the Samsung 990 Pro M.2 SSD 1TB would be compatible to put in the second slot?

HP Recommended

Yes, but I don't know if the second slot is Gen 3 or Gen 4.

The service manual doesn't specify what Gen the 2nd slot is and on many of the HP notebooks with the Intel 11th gen core processors and two NVMe SSD slots, the primary slot is Gen 4 and the secondary slot is Gen 3.

Sometimes that info is printed on the motherboard.

but that doesn't matter for the compatibility right? it's just a matter of reading/writing speed?

HP Recommended

That is 100% correct.

You may as well buy the faster drive in case the slot is PCIe Gen 4.

alright, thank you so much for the info and patience!

You're very welcome.

Glad to have been of assistance.
