Spectre x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Bought new HP Spectre x360 last week. From first power on, in the Windows event logs following warnings are shown at every start of the computer:

System warning, Kernel PnP, ID 219 "Error loading driver \Driver\WUDFRd for device ACPI\INT3400\2&daba3ff&1.". This is followed by 3 more system warnings, Kernel PnP, ID 219 "Error loading driver \Driver\WudfRd for device HID\Vid_8087&Pid_0AC2\6&14677497&0&0000." and another system warning, Kernel PnP, ID 219 same text, but device "Vid_8087&Pid_0AC3".

Furthermore there is a system warning, Kernel-Processor-Power, ID 37 "The speed of processor "3" in group "0" has been limited to system firmware ..."

The issue probably is caused by an old HP provided driver for the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework. The most recent version of this driver from HP is 8.2.11000.2996 from 10.08.2016 (!) at a time where the used i7 processor hasn't been available. The download file from HP is called "sp78556.exe".

Where can I download an up-to-date driver for the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework?

(Note: Intel does not provide such drivers for download)

Hi:

This is the latest one that I know of...

This package contains the driver that enables the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework firmware. Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework provide system temperature and power utilization information for the system thermal protection to function properly. This package is provided for supported notebook models running a supported operating system.

Paul,

Thanks a lot for your very much appreciated fast answer. The driver sp79398 (Version 8.2.11003.3588) is for a different HP notebook series (e. g. HP 15-bs000 Laptop-PC). Nevertheless, I tried it on the Spectre x360, unfortunately with the same errors as version 8.2.11000.2996.

The original Intel issue date of driver version 8.2.11003.3588 is January 10, 2017. It took HP about 3 months to release it for some notebooks. Most irritating: the driver version 8.2.11000.2996 delivered by HP for their new Spectre x360 series with i7-7500U processor is from August 10, 2016. Should be ovious that this driver won't work.

In addition to this thread I contacted HP support. They aren't of much use and just confirm that there is no other driver than version 8.2.11000.2996.

While a standard user may not notice anything special with his Spectre x360, the wrong driver for the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework won't allow to use the maximum performance and reduce the total lifetime of the notebook (ref. e. g. Microsoft Surface Pro).

You're very welcome.

Sorry that driver didn't make a difference.

I realized it was for a different model series, but in most cases, hardware is hardware.

Both platforms have the same kaby lake chipset and 7th gen core processors.

It is interesting that HP has a newer sp##### of the driver for the HP 250 G6 business notebook...but the same driver version...

That makes no sense to me.

Paul, again thanks for your information.

Meanwhile I did some further "research".  In following thread basically the same issue was raised about 2 months ago without any solution:

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Device-ACPI-INT3400-2-amp-daba...

In addition, I visited a local midsize computer store (some 50 different notebooks etc.). I checked several notebooks with Windows 10 and kaby lake processors (i5/i7) of Acer, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, Porsche Design. The HP Pavilion had a newer driver for the Intel DPTF as my Spectre x360. Same for the Microsoft Surface Pro, which used a driver version 8.2.11004.3973. However, the absolute irritating outcome is that without any exception all notebooks, tablets, convertibles with kaby lake processors showed the same system warnings ID 219 regarding the Intel DPTF and ID 37 for performance limitation on processor 3 (i7) in the event logs. The device manager details confirms that on all 5 Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework devices "further installation are required".

A week ago, Dell has issued for their notebooks a new driver 8.3.10203.4295 (Intel release date April 19, 2017) for the Intel DPTF. Unfortunately, this driver can not be tested on my HP Spectre.

What does this ultimately mean?

Is it a serious issue concerning performance and lifetime of the notebooks or am I just a bit paranoid?

Why cann't Intel provide up-to-date drivers for their chipsets or are the computer manufacturers just to lazy to adapt the basic drivers to their designs?

You're very welcome.

Yes it is a shame that Intel doesn't have this driver on their website.

It seems that they are releasing updated DPTF drivers to the OEM's, so I don't know why they don't have the driver available on their website like they do the graphics.

How come you can't try the Dell driver?

Did you try using a free utility like 7-Zip and extracting the driver into its driver folder, then browsing to the driver folder from the DPTF device in the device manager>update driver>browse my computer...

Of course I extracted the installer of the newer Dell package before. However, the structure is too different. Hence I decided not to follow the process of a manual driver installation, especially because none of the Dell provided INF-files contains sections for the trouble devices Vid_8087&Pid_0AC2, Vid_8087&Pid_0AC3 etc.

In addition, the official HP package SP78556 contains "dptf_pch" files, the Dell package doesn't. The "esif_manager" in the Dell package is fundamentally different containing lots of new and changed policies around power and thermal management.

I am not a chip set expert, hence doesn't like to take unnecessary risks on a brand new notebook. It's HPs responsibility to sell fully functioning computers. Probably they got at the same time as Dell the latest driver package from Intel. Why can't they provide in time up-to-date driver software for products they already sell for more than 7 months. This is ridiculous for a company believing to be the world largest computer manufacturer.

Please don't take your frustrations out on me.

The only folks that can help you are at HP, and the only way you might be able to get the ball rolling is to contact the HP executive team directly at the link below, and explain the problem and request a solution.

Paul,

Sorry, if my previous post lead to missinterpretation. I am aware that your not working for HP and it definitely wasn't my intention to blame you, especially because you are the only one, who provided some help on this thread with good ideas. Thanks a lot for this and in addtion for your "complain link". Probably I won't use that link, but rather write a formal complain letter to the regional head of HP here in Europe.

You're very welcome.

Hopefully someone from HP will listen to you and take action.

If I come across an updated W10 DPTF driver from HP, I will post it here.
