HP ProBook 6470b
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello everyone,

The battery of my laptop ( HP ProBook 6470b) was about 4 yrs old and was completed aged.  I replaced the battery and the new battery will not charge. It says 77%, plugged in.

I perfomed what was recommanded here: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/The-battery-percentage-never-g...

However, the hard reset did not work.

I also followed this procedure:

Step 01. Click on the Start Button
Step 02. Type "Device Manager" in the start search box & open the Device Manager
Step 03. Look for Batteries and expand it by click on the + symbol on the left
Step 04. Right Click on "Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery" & uninstall
Note: This Battery driver will get re-installed automatically when you restart the Notebook again
Step 05. Please Shutdown the Notebook
Step 06. Please remove the Battery and unplug the Power Adapter
Step 07. Press and Hold the Power Button for full 1 Minute
Step 08. Go ahead and put back the Battery and connect the Power Adapter
Step 09. Look for "Plugged In Charging" message on the Battery icon

But it did not work.

Finally, I would like to mention that the orginal charger was dead and I had to change it. Do you the fact that the new battery does not work can be linked to a compability issue with the charger? Because this new charger worked on the old battery.

Many thanks for your help.

Kind regards,

From where did you get the battery and is it a genuine HP product? Unfortunately it is not rare to get a bad "new" battery. Very hard to manufacture laptop batteries and the 3rd party vendors do a pretty good but not perfect job of quality control. Have you tried running a battery diagnostic routine on it?

Dear Huffer,

Thank you for the quick reply.

I bought two batteries from 3rd-party suppliers (DTK and NinjaBatt) and both of them showed the same issues and the same results after a battery diagnostic routine: "Replace" / "The battery reports a failure and needs to be replaced as soon as possible."

After seeing this message with the first battery, I thought like you that it was the battery. But with the second one showing the same issue, I started to think it was the laptop or the charger.

Kind regards,

Not likely the charger. I hesitate to draw much of a conclusion from 2 aftermarket batteries but tend to agree odds are long it could be 2 bad batteries in a row. I think you likely have damage to the motherboard charging circuitry.

Dear Huffer,

Thank you for your remark.

How can I confirm your theory about the damaged motherboard charging circuitry? And how could this happen? Wrong charger?

Kind regards,

Wrong charger would be a possible cause. It just happens with age and use of electronics. Inability to properly charge a known good battery is the diagnosis for a bad charging circuit. You might also try a full cycle of hardware tests from the hardware diagnostics and see if you get a motherboard error.

Dear Huffer,

Thank you for your reply.

I will perform a round of hardware checks and let you know.

Hello again,

I just made a system test with the HP PC hardware diagnostic tool and only the battery check test failed. Is it highly possible that the second aftermarket battery is bad as well?

Which test can tell me about a motherboard issue?

Many thanks.

The system test is a motherboard test. I would say 2 bad batteries in a row is highly unlikely but not impossible.

Hello again,

I performed an extended system check and here is the error I got. It seems that only the battery failed the tes due to the following failure:

I guess the issue comes from the battery. Where can I find a proper one?

Thank you.
