HP Pavilion dv6

I've put a relatively new HDD in that PC, but the system keep asks me to diagnostic the hardware and memory for an infinity of time.
Also the error log say "0601".

I've mount the HDD in a wrong way? How to solve it?

Hi @Novalismo,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

Let's try these steps.

The "0601" error code you're encountering on your HP Pavilion Dv6 typically indicates an issue with the CMOS battery, which is responsible for maintaining the system's BIOS settings. However, given that you've recently installed a new HDD and the system is repeatedly asking for hardware diagnostics, there might be additional issues at play.

Steps to Troubleshoot and Resolve the Issue

Check the CMOS Battery:

  • The error code "0601" suggests a CMOS battery failure.
  • Replace the CMOS battery (usually a CR2032 coin cell) with a new one.
  • This battery is located on the motherboard. If you're comfortable opening your laptop, you can replace it yourself. Otherwise, I recommend you contact phone support.

Verify the HDD Installation:

  • Ensure that the new HDD is properly connected.
  • Check both the data (SATA) and power connections to ensure they are secure.

Run Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Even though the system is repeatedly asking for diagnostics, running a full hardware diagnostic can help identify the specific issue.
  • Restart your laptop and press Esc to access the Startup Menu.
  • Press F2 to enter the System Diagnostics.
  • Run the extensive test to check for any hardware issues, especially focusing on the HDD and memory.

Check for BIOS Updates:

  • An outdated BIOS might cause compatibility issues with new hardware.
  • Visit the HP support website, enter your laptop model, and download the latest BIOS update.
  • Follow the instructions provided by HP to update the BIOS.

Reset BIOS Settings:

  • Enter the BIOS setup by pressing F10 during startup.
  • Reset the BIOS settings to default to ensure there are no incorrect configurations.

Check Memory Modules:

  • Since the system is also asking to diagnose memory, there might be an issue with your RAM.
  • Ensure that the memory modules are properly seated.
  • If you have multiple memory sticks, try booting with one at a time to identify any faulty module.

Boot from a Different Source:

  • Try booting from a bootable USB drive or CD/DVD to see if the system can bypass the diagnostics loop.
  • This can help you access tools for further diagnostics and repairs.

Additional Steps

  • Reinstall the Operating System: If the hardware checks out and the HDD is healthy, consider reinstalling the operating system to ensure that there are no software issues causing the problem.

If the issue persists after trying all these steps, the unit might need repair.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
