Update on this workaround: Playing online games with heavy use of the arrow keys, on the 0.5 sec settings, and after days of playing, the keyboard did stop working once. However, this is a great improvement from before where the keyboard would stop every time after 5 - 10 minutes of using the arrow keys. I changed the settings to 0.7 sec to see if the issue is resolved during gameplay. In my opinion, if the keyboard stopped once during gameplay, then personal/office use should be fine with 0.5 sec settings.
HP still needs to address this issue, but my hopes are low at this point. 😑

I have noticed that sometimes the keys work quickly with no delay, when this happens then the keyboard stops. I did notice this when scrolling up/down a page, once in chrome and another time in PHPed which is an IDE a bit like VSCcode, normally it's slow with the delay but then on occasions it works quickly, I have no idea why this is intermittent unless this is related to the keyboard locking issue over riding the windows drivers.
As you say, HP need to come up with an update to solve this rather than having a bodge it, this appears to be a wide enough issue on this model, I am wondering if this also affects other models? Does it only affect Windows?

Update: The keyboard has shut off randomly again with the changes. I personally think that the span of the days that it did not shut off was unrelated to the filter key settings. This is a huge problem! I'm going to try to connect it to a docking station and see if an external keyboard resolves the issue... 😞

It's becoming clear that the issue is related to the repeat speed on the arrow keys. It may be that other keys cause the issue and we're only seeing it on the arrow keys as they're the one which are used for scrolling.
While the repeat speed is slow using the filter keys setting then I don't have any issues with the keyboard locking, but sometimes this just doesn't slow down the repeat and the keyboard locks, it's as if the HP drivers ignore the repeat settings.
I did wonder if this affects other HP laptops and found a couple of posts,
You can try pressing and holding the right Shift key for eight seconds to unlock it.
I'm not sure if this works on the envy, but I'll try it next time, it's going to be a lot quicker than hibernate and remove the power.

I have an external keyboard and never have the issue when working on that. However, when I'm out and about (as a laptop should be) and I have to use the HP keyboard then it invariably freezes. I'm going to try the different keyboard settings and will hope for the best. HP really need to take note for future models though. Very pleased I found this thread - thank you!
