I recently installed a new module of memory inside of my laptop, and when attempting to start I back up, the fans and lights kick on, but the screen will not. There are no POST beeps, and I have attempted reseating the RAM multiple times to no avail. Both are CL9, the old module was 4 GB, new one 8 GB, both are DDR3. My only guess is that the speed is wrong, old stick was PC3L-12800, but only ran at 1333 anyways (vendor locked?), the new module is PC3L-10600. Thank you in advance.

Good Day. A warm welcome to the HP community. I reviewed the case relating to issues with the computer not posting after installing new RAM modules. I will be delighted to assist you here.

Superb description, brilliant troubleshooting and terrific observations made before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

To assist you with accurate information I would require more information regarding this.

  • Did you check with a local technician to see if the RAM modules are compatible?
  • Did try with just the original RAM (old one) and check if the computer boots up?
  • Did you check the service manual for the maximum RAM supported by the computer? (I am sure you have)

For a start please try these steps:

  • Product specifications of the computer: http://hp.care/2eDRBTZ
  • Service Manual link: http://hp.care/2eE0ahq  Please refer to page# 1 and Page 18 for the supported ram modules for the computer tested by HP. IT gives a small white list of supported RAM modules with specs, configuration and part numbers.
  • Please try the old RAM on the same RAM slot where the new RAM sits. If you have installed both RAM modules which is highly unlikely going by your profound technical expertise, then please remove one of the modules and check again.
  • This computer supports only a Maximum of 8 GB of RAM.
  • Also, remove the new Ram module and check if the old one works in the same slot.
  • If it does, then you’ve hit the nail on its head. If the RAM capacity is the same as the one prescribed in the service manual, then the bus speeds have a mismatch and hence the computer is not firing up.
  • Also, to isolate the issue further, you could try the new RAM module on another slot if it is accessible to you or on a different computer to check if the new ram module works fine if possible. It will eliminate a dead on arrival RAM module.

Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, Going by your technical expertise and competence I am sure you will be able to perform these steps without breaking a sweat. 🙂
