HP ZBook 15 G3 Base Model Mobile Workstation
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Computer: hp zbook 15 g3 base edition.

- Need to replace screen LP156WF6(SP)(B1) SPB1 LCD 15.6"

- Bought MB156CS01-8 (should be compatible according to vendor)

Problems:

1) screen working in general but no backlight (checked with flashlight)

2) HDMI output not working when screen is connected to computer

-Tried updating drivers + bios,to no avail

Is this MB156CS01-8 compatible with computer? If not, how can I find out which model to buy? If it is compatible, what would be the next step?

Thanks in advance, FoxtrottUnicorn

Go to the below site and enter your serial number and look for the display

https://partsurfer.hp.com/

Possibly it might be (I am guessing)

848255-001
15.6-inch FHD LED SVA AntiGlare display panel (raw panel only)

then look up that HP part number for example

https://www.google.com/search?q=hp+display+848255-001

Best is to remove the old part to verify the part number is correct

So I definitely bought the right monitor this time, but the issue of no backlight remains. Can you point me to what I could do next? I'm thinking of taking the computer to a repair service now tbh

What caused you to replace the screen? Did you have backlight on the replaced screen?

HP Recommended

I had an accident where Olive oil was poured over my laptop, and that oil got between the layers of my original screen. That's why I replaced it. But back then the backlight was still working, that wasn't a problem. My laptop is also running without issues through HDMI output atm.

So when you connect the new screen you can see an image if you shine a light on it but the backlight just does not come on so the screen is very dim? If so I think the oil may have damaged the port where the video cable attaches to the motherboard. You might try cleaning it out with rubbing alcohol and let it dry before connecting the screen cable. The fact that you get video through the HDMI port means the video chip on the motherboard is not damaged but the connection from motherboard to screen still has to be undamaged. If you are using the same screen cable its also possible it got damaged by the oil.

BTW I also have a Zbook 15 g3. Are you using the standard onboard video or do you have an MXM add-in video card?

In the end I sent my laptop to a repair service. this is what they did:

Following a thorough examination of your device, we would like to inform you that there is liquid damage which has caused a short circuit at the display connection. In order to restore functionality, we have replaced the backlight fuse and the voltage regulator chip for the display. As part of the ultrasonic cleaning, we cleaned the entire mainboard and the housing with a special liquid to ensure that no further damage was caused by the liquid. This procedure helps to maintain the functionality of the device and prevent possible consequential damage.

My computer is working without a hitch now. Thank you for your help, I will close this topic.

So my diagnosis was close but no way I could have predicted you would find such a resourceful repair shop. Usually damage to the video port means a new motherboard but these guys have some very advanced tech skills. I might ask what they charged for the service but that is personal. Thanks for the report.

I got my system repaired by: https://notebook-repair-corner.at/

It cost me 398€, but I used a EU repair voucher (up to 2oo€) which made it a lot more affordable.
