Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I just got this laptop yesterday and I can hear a failry loud mechanical scratching noise on the right side of the laptop. It is near the speaker but I don't think it is coming from the speaker itself (The noises stay the same regardless of volume or if something is or isn't playing).

Also while trying to resolve this issue I tried to restart the computer, at which point I could no longer make it past the login screen, as it would just go to a blank screen. I had to do a complete system reset in order to be able to get back in, and it seems to be working now, but the scrathching noise is still present. The fan was also loud and making a buzzing noise for a while when I first started but that seems to have fixed itself.

I have tired the recommended solutions for crackling speakers, and I updated the BIOS, but neither changed anything. At this point I feel like its an issue with an internal component, unless you can think of anything else to try.

Hello brendank642

My guess is if its not coming out of the speaker as you say, then it might be the hard drive.

The hard drive is right above the right side speaker down at the bottom right side of the base.

Some HDD's will make a small amount of noise as the head moves back and forth searching the platters. But if its making an unusually loud scratching sound, its not normal.

If you purchased this just yesterday, you have two options.

Take it back to the store you bought it from for an exchange (fastest).

Or contact HP Support for help under the warranty.
