When I hover over the battery icon in the taskbar, I see this: "No battery is detected". It shows the battery is fully charged. The computer has always been plugged in when I'm using it, but I would like to be able to use it without being plugged in.
I recently changed from HDD to SSD, and installed more memory.

Thank you Echo_Lake. I've read that performing a hard reset "erases all of the information that is stored in your notebook's temporary memory". What exactly will be erased? I've also read that messing with the BIOS is risky. It could end up that I have a useless machine. Is this true? If you've seen my other posts, you'll know that I've recently made some hardware changes. Thanks again for your reply, Mike

What happens when you unplug the charger?
Performing a hard reset will not erase anything from your computer. If the BIOS update is not performed correctly or interrupted it can cause issues.

Thanks for your reply The_Fossette. When I unplug the charger the computer shuts off immediately. I'm kinda scared to do a BIOS update because of what I've read online about turning the computer into a "brick"! I opened the case a couple months ago to clean the fan. While I had it opened I upgraded to an SSD, and installed more RAM. I need to open it again soon to install a new fan. Is there anything I can do while I have it open to solve the battery issue? Mayhaps the BIOS should have been updated due to the changes I made? Thanks again, Mike

Have you tried replacing the battery? If yes, and still facing the issue, then the issue might be with the charging board and I recommend you contact support to check the available service options for your computer.
Here is how you can get in touch with support.
1)Click on this link – www.hp.com/contacthp/
2)Select the product type.
3)Enter the serial number of your device or select let HP detect your product option.
4)Select the country from the drop-down.
5)You should see the HP phone support number or Chat option listed.
Cheers!

Thanks The_Fossette. I have not replaced the battery, but I will. I'm curious about the BIOS update. The current BIOS has a 2016 date. The computer seems to work fine, but it's old. Mayhaps a new battery is all it needs.

Yes, a new battery should fix the issue.
Let me know how it goes.

I put in a new battery, and I still got the "no battery detected" notice when I hovered over the battery icon in the taskbar. I found a video on youtube that said to remove a couple of drivers. I did. It seems to have worked. I'm on battery power as I write this.
I'm still curious about the BIOS update. I wonder if the potential benefits outweigh the potential damage? The current BIOS is from 7-25-16. It's named Insyde f.81. There is a newer one on the HP website but I didn't write down the details. I don't even know what BIOS is! But I have read online that I could render my computer useless if I attempt to update it and do something wrong. I sure don't want to have a "brick" after spending $120 on a SSD and 8G new RAM, and $90 on a new battery!
Can this be answered here or do I need to start another topic?
Thanks for your help,
Mike
