*** Please please help me figure this out, I want my laptop to work well when I'm in school and not distract anyone ***

Hi, I've had a noise coming from my computer and it's annoying.  I want to fix it.  I just replaced the battery and one weird clicking noise went away and it's no longer getting super hot (the battery wasn't holding charge long when unplugged thus the reason I replaced it but it fixed more things)... but I have 1 more noise to get rid of that's bothering me and will distract people in school if I have my laptop on.

I've had this computer since 2016.   I attached a recording of it.  It seems really loud in the recording because I put it right under my computer near the vents, so imagine it being lower in volume.  I can't pinpoint where it's coming from exactly.  For sure, it's coming from the back end of the computer, not the front end (where the touchpad is).

I'm not sure how to share this sound other than through a google drive since youtube won't accept it since there's not video.

Here is a link of the sound: https://drive.google.com/file/d/106NJCZ3yA2lZLFvecrFIpNmBhibdDWFG/view?usp=sharing

NOTE: Could it be the fan?

@judyaz

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

Firstly, run BIOS Update: Follow steps from the link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00042629

NOTE: It is normal for the fans to spin loudly for five to twenty seconds when the computer initially turns on.

Refer to this document: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01007591 Fan is Noisy and Spins Constantly (Windows)

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hi Echo_lake,

I went through the HP Support Assistant, clicked my device, and checked for updates.  It said my computer is up to date.  The site said that if I needed bios updates, it would have prompted me.   So, am I ok then with that?

Could the noise be something other than the fan?  Like the hard drive, what did it sound like to you?

Thank you for posting back,

Does your system freeze or hang up?

Are you getting an error code or message?

Keep me posted!

ECHO_LAKE, did you have a chance to see my previous response?

Let us run a test on the hardware components of the PC

1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.

3. Perform System Test > Extensive test. Share the result

Keep me posted.

Kumar0307,

I did as you said and it took a few hours but everything passed.

An additional note, I don't hear the noise right now I just hear the fan running.  It will eventually start making the cranking noise though as soon as I start using it more.  Also, the fan runs A LOT on this laptop.  Not sure if there's something I can do for that.
