HP OMEN ax050nf 15''
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I've installed a samsung 960 evo PCI NVMe on the m2 port, after installing Windows 10 with a usb key it's impossible to boot on the SSD and finalize the installation ...

Eeven if i change the UEFI setting it just says "No bootable device" or "Install and operating system on your harddrive"

If i plug the SSD on an other laptop it works well and can boot Windows 10 to finalize the installation without any issue. It's not the first post i see with this kind of problem, but no solution is provided.

I've tried to instal W10 with usb and cloning from the original HDD, i have the same problem...

Any ideas ?

Greetings @Shaman2501

Welcome to HP Forums and Thanks for the post.

I understand that you are unable to install the OS on the SSD on your computer, is that right?

Kudos to you for trying to troubleshoot the issue on your own.

Not to worry, I will be glad to assist you.

Have you installed the latest BIOS on your computer?

Boot the computer to BIOS by tapping F10 repeatedly on startup.

Have only the SSD installed.

Restore the BIOS to defaults.

Make sure legacy boot is disabled and secure boot is enabled.

Save and Exit BIOS and install the OS on your computer.

Let me know if this helped.

Hi @Chimney_83

Secure boot is enabled, legacy mode disabled.

I've booted on the usb to install W10, the installer can see the ssd and start to install on it, then comes the reboot moment ... after rebooting it can't boot on the ssd to finish the installation, it says :

"Boot Device not found

Please install an operating system on your hard disk.

Hard Disk (3F0)"

Stil the same problem 😕

Thanks for the reply and trying the suggested steps. Are you installing a retail copy of the OS or from the Recovery kit created on your computer.

If you are using the recovery kit created on the computer with the original OS, it might not support any parts that are not listed in the service guide.

Refer to this HP Article and try the steps suggested.

Try to update the BIOS by creating a BIOS update kit on USB stick. Refer to this HP Article for assistance.

Follow the procedure mentioned under "Updating the BIOS when Windows does not start (Windows 10, 8, 7)" section of the article.

Once you have updated the BIOS, try to reinstall the OS on your computer using a retail copy of the OS from Microsoft.

If the issue persists, revert back to the original configuration of the computer.

Refer to this service guide of your computer to know the parts tested on your computer. Click here for the user guide.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi @Chimney_83

The BIOS is already up to date (Insyde H20 rev 5.0    F.38)

I'm using a retail version of Windows 10 because i bought the laptop with a freedos option.

I've checked the parts tested on my computer and it says it should work with :

1 TB (7200) 9.5 mm hard drive
+ 512 GB PCIe Non-Volatile
Memory Express (NVMe) Triple
Level Cell (TLC) M.2 SSD

We are getting numerous reports of similar problems with the Evo 960 drives. The chipset appears to cause compatibility issues with a wide range of HP models that should work with an NVME/PCIe M.2 disks and do work with other models like the Samsung PM961.

HP specifies a part number drive to use and it is a PM961. We have not received reports of issues when using the HP-specified disk. M.2 drives are apparently not 100% generic and industry standard at this point and getting them to work is a bit of a grey art.

Thanks Huffer for this honest answer.

Do you know if there are others specified ssd diks that can works with the Omen ax050nf ?

HP Recommended

I actually have that model series (15-ax200 a little newer) as my 2017 "loaner" from HP and have personally installed a 512 gig Samsung PM961 in it to replace the 128 gig SATA M.2 it was delivered with. There is a not so good cell phone video posted on here somewhere of me doing the upgrade.

Your specified 512 gig may be a Samsung SM951 which is a slightly older model.

Generic SSD 512 GB 2280 M2 PCIe 3x4SS NVMe TLC TL, not for products with AMD Radeon hybrid graphics 847110-007

HP sells it for $126 which is a great deal. Last one I ordered got to me in Indiana in 2-3 days.

@Huffer,

I bought a HP omen 880-073nf and at the same time a samsung nvme ssd 960 evo M.2. I think I have compatibility issue, because I installed windows 10 on the ssd but I was unable to boot on it despite all bios options. I also updated the bios to its latest version without success. Will it be fixed with update or is it an hardware compatibility issue? Can I try another NVME SSD, and which models would you recommend?

Thank you for your help
