Upgrading RAM for HP EliteBook 840 machines is a very "fun" task - been there, done that - I bought COMPATIBLE RAM guarantied from Crucial and I had to return it. I finally use CPU-Z to find out what is existing RAM and bought same brand to make may machine to work.
Part from HP : 16 GB (SODIMM, DDR5-4800, 1.1v, NECC) part # M97596-001
We all know it is cheaper to buy parts elsewhere but to be sure you get the RIGHT part # (or whcsh brand CPU-Z gives you).
