Hi @Kathryn62

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for sharing your concern—and I completely understand the worry. Leaving a laptop plugged in continuously for a year might sound alarming, but modern HP laptops are designed to manage battery health intelligently.

You likely haven’t ruined the battery, especially if you haven’t received any warning messages.

Let’s walk through how to check your battery’s condition and optimize it going forward.

Step 1: Check Battery Health Using HP Diagnostics

  1. Press Windows + S, type HP Hardware Diagnostics, and open the app.
  2. Click Power > Battery Check.
  3. Review the battery status:
    • OK means the battery is healthy.
    • Replace or Weak means the battery has degraded.

Step 2: Review Battery Report in Windows

  1. Press Windows + X > Windows Terminal (Admin).
  2. Type the following command and press Enter:
    powercfg /batteryreport
  3. This generates a report at:
    C:\Users\[YourUsername]\battery-report.html
  4. Open the file and check:
    • Design Capacity vs Full Charge Capacity
    • Cycle Count
    • Recent usage and charge patterns

This gives a clear picture of how the battery has aged.

Step 3: Enable Battery Conservation Features

If your laptop supports it:

  • Open HP App or HP Command Center.
  • Look for Battery Health Manager or Smart Sense.
  • Enable Maximize Battery Health or Adaptive Charging.

These features prevent overcharging and reduce wear during long plug-in periods.

Step 4: Use Battery Occasionally

To maintain battery health:

  • Unplug and run on battery once every few weeks.
  • Avoid letting the battery drain below 20% regularly.
  • Keep the laptop in a cool, ventilated space.

Let me know what the battery report shows or if you need help interpreting it. You’ve taken great care of your system—and I’ll help you keep it running strong.
