Microsoft Windows 11

I've encountered a strange limitation with my new Omnibook and was wondering if it's normal. Basically, when I hold the W and SHIFT keys, pressing the spacebar does nothing. This mainly impacts games as it's a fairly common key combo - usually holding W moves your character forward, holding SHIFT turns the forward movement into a sprint, and SPACEBAR makes the character jump - together executing a running jump. However, on this keyboard, it's not possible to do because of this issue.

What's odd is that the spacebar works fine when holding SHIFT and any of the keys around W, just not W itself. Outside of remapping keys, is there any fix for this? Is this a known issue?

Hi @Ozziemandius,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I understand how frustrating this can be, especially in games where W + Shift + Space is commonly used for sprinting and jumping.

Based on your description, this is most likely due to keyboard ghosting (limited key rollover). On some slim laptop keyboards, certain three-key combinations cannot be detected because of the keyboard's internal matrix design. Since Shift + Space works with keys around W, but not with W itself, this points to a hardware limitation rather than a software or Windows issue.

What you can try:

Disable Windows keyboard shortcuts:

  • Go to Settings > Time & Language > Language & Region > Typing > Advanced keyboard settings.

  • Open Input language hotkeys, select the language, choose Change Key Sequence, and set it to Not Assigned.

  • Restart the notebook.
  1. Remap the game controls:

    • Change the Sprint key to another key such as Left Ctrl, Left Alt, or Caps Lock if the game allows key remapping.

  2. Use an external keyboard:

    • If you frequently play games requiring multiple simultaneous key presses, an external keyboard with anti-ghosting/N-key rollover (NKRO) support will provide the best experience.

Expected outcome:

If the key combination is limited by the keyboard hardware, there is no software setting or driver update that can enable that specific combination. Remapping the controls or using an external gaming keyboard are the most effective solutions.

I hope this helps. Take care and have a great day!

Thank you for your response. I did try your suggestion regarding the Change Key Sequence option, but it didn't seem to help. I agree that remapping the game's controls and using external keyboards (or controllers) are valid workarounds, but it's still a bummer that it cannot work with the built-in keyboard, especially with a laptop that comes with powerful integrated graphics (Arc B390) that can play modern games quite well.

Either way, it's good to hear from an actual HP representative that it is indeed a hardware limitation - having that level of certainty will go a long way towards helping people make informed decisions.

I hope HP considers this keyboard combo for future gaming-capable thin and light laptops.

Thank you for the update. Since changing the Change Key Sequence setting did not resolve the issue, this behavior is consistent with a hardware keyboard limitation. Certain key combinations, such as W + Shift + Spacebar, may not register due to the keyboard's rollover design and are not caused by software or driver issues.

For games that require this combination, remapping the controls or using an external keyboard or game controller are the recommended alternatives.

We appreciate your feedback regarding key rollover support. Comments like yours help highlight real-world usage scenarios and are valuable for future product improvements. Thank you for sharing your experience with the community.
