- Out of power — How do I test?

I noticed it’s not charging though it’s plugged in. It’s almost out of power, so I cannot run a 4-hour hardware test. The adapter appears undamaged, but it doesn’t have a light so I can’t tell if it’s working. I’m hoping someone can help with these questions:
How might I test whether the problem is the adapter or the laptop? (I have a multimeter.)
If the laptop is the problem, what might be wrong and what part(s) might need replacing?

Hi @SomeScreenName,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
To diagnose whether the problem lies with the adapter or the laptop, you can follow these steps.
Testing the Adapter with a Multimeter
Set Up the Multimeter:
- Turn on your multimeter and set it to the DC voltage setting.
- Ensure the probes are correctly inserted (black probe in the common (COM) port and red probe in the voltage (V) port).
Check the Adapter Output:
- Find the voltage output specifications on the adapter (usually listed on a label).
- Plug the adapter into an electrical outlet and touch the red probe to the inner part of the adapter plug (the pin) and the black probe to the outer part (the barrel).
- Read the voltage on the multimeter display. Compare it with the voltage rating on the adapter. If the reading is significantly lower than the specified voltage, the adapter might be faulty.
Diagnosing the Laptop
If the adapter is working correctly, the issue may be with the laptop. Here are some potential problems and steps you can take:
Check the Power Jack:
- The power jack where you plug in the adapter might be loose or damaged. Wiggle the adapter gently while it's plugged in to see if the charging light flickers or if the laptop briefly shows it's charging. If it does, the power jack might need to be repaired or replaced.
Battery Issues:
- The battery itself might be faulty. If the laptop runs when the adapter is plugged in but doesn’t charge, the battery might need replacing.
Motherboard or Charging Circuit:
- If neither the adapter nor the battery is the issue, the problem might be with the motherboard or charging circuit.
BIOS Settings:
- Sometimes, updating or resetting the BIOS can resolve charging issues. Ensure your BIOS is up to date by checking the HP support website.
Steps to Take Next
Test the Adapter:
- Use the multimeter to confirm if the adapter is supplying the correct voltage.
Visual Inspection:
- Inspect the laptop’s power jack and adapter plug for any obvious signs of damage.
Try a Different Adapter:
- If possible, try using another compatible adapter to see if the laptop charges.
Check BIOS:
- If the laptop has some power left, enter the BIOS setup and check the battery status and settings.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
