HP still posts the Service manual for these:
You could install up to a Turion TL-68 processor and it will run up to 4 gigs of DDR2-667 SO-DIMM.
I would first install 4 gigs of RAM. Very easy to do and it would be a big improvement.
For $15 it is hard to go wrong and you may be happy with just this upgrade:
I would hesitate to mess with the CPU. I have disassembled quite a few of that model some years back when they were a hot topic here for all kinds of issues relating to nVidia graphics. That is why I would not invest any significant money in it and avoid disassembling it as much as possible. They are a bear to work on with lots of subassemblies and daughterboards with ribbon cable all over the place. Memory upgrade is a piece of cake and just takes removing an easy access panel on the bottom. SSDs are not well supported on that model but a faster 7200 rpm hard drive might be my next suggestion.
I would not worry about the BIOS. If you must here is the last F.34 BIOS for AMD systems (see attached) but if I recall you should not try to flash this from Windows 7 as it has a tendency to freeze up.
