I have an HP Omen Laptop that overheats (gets really hot) when I play video games. It does not overheat on battery power, only when plugged in.
I have tried everything including cleaning the internal fans, keeping the room temperature cool, bought a portable cooling fan, and play my game on the lowest setting. I also downloaded Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and reduce my Turbo Boost max power. I also downloaded HP cool sense. Nothing seems to help, Within 15 to 20 minutes of playing a video game, My GPU utilization reaches 76 degrees Celsius/My CPU utilization reaches above 90 degrees Celsius, at which point the laptop shuts down.
The laptop does not overheat on battery power, only when plugged in.

Welcome to the HP Community
Let's update the BIOS and Graphics drivers using the below link:
Click here: https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/selfservice/omen-by-hp-17-an000-laptop-pc/15551440/model/174037...
If the issue persists, I suggest you download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/p...
HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook
Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.
Also, ensure Windows is up to date.
Select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available
Keep me posted, how it goes!

Thanks for your reply. I updated the BIOS and graphics driver but the computer was still overheating after a few minutes of gameplay. I checked the HP assistant, no updates available(see screenshots).
Within 5 minutes of gameplay, laptop shot to 79°C for GPU utilization and 85°C for CPU utilization. My room temperature is 17°C (64°F ).
Again, when on battery power it does not overheat. It only happens when plugged in.

After doing some reading online, it appears the reason why Laptops do not overheat on battery power is that the PC automatically switches from the dedicated graphics to the integrated graphics. Since that's the case my next question is how do I disable the Nvidia Graphic card and only use the Intel GPU.
On my older laptop, I was able to switch to the intel GPU from the Nvidia control panel - Manage 3d settings, however on the HP Omen 17, I do not see the option to switch to the integrated GPU from the control panel. Also, when I checked the device manager, it only shows one graphic card, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070.
Does anyone know if this is possible on the Omen 17 LAPTOPS?

The OMEN HP - 17-an053nr is a Gaming System and uses the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 as the Main and Only Graphics Card as per the Specifications. You can refer to this Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c05561140
You cannot switch the Graphics from Nvidia to the integrated GPU for this Model since this Model was designed mainly for Gaming
Thank you 😊
