HP Pavilion Gaming 15-cx0000
Microsoft Windows 11

Plugged in Without battery laptop won’t power on nor show sign of being plugged in. But when battery is added the charging indicator comes on and laptop powers on. But after booted, it shows plugged in charging but the battery drains instead of charging. I want to understand if it’s normal for the laptop not to power on without battery. My laptop is  pavilion gaming 15-cx0000 core i7 8th gen 16gb ram.

I later found out my old battery was never the problem, the fault was from the charging IC unit all along. I had to change it. It’s now working perfectly, it can even power on while plugged in without the presence of the battery.

My old battery is working perfectly, it now charges up to 100%. My charger too is intact.

Thank you for the assistance, my problem is now solved.

Hi @Dutibe04,

Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I see that you wanted to know if your HP Pavilion Gaming 15-Cx0000 can power on without the battery installed.

You need the battery in order to start the laptop. There is no practical way to bypass the battery if not installed. Leave the old battery in so you can use the laptop. Depending on the computer, the charger is normally designed to charge the battery and may not power the computer by itself.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thanks.. I think I’ll probably need to change the battery.

I just added a new battery, I came up, but instead for the battery to add up while on charging, it discharges. I don’t want the battery to die cause it might not come up again. Cause like you said “it needs a battery to power up and the charger can’t power the system.” Please what could be the problem?

Hi @Dutibe04,

If your Pavilion 15-cx laptop won’t power on when plugged in, but powers on when a battery is added, there are a few possible reasons why this is happening. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can take to identify the cause and fix the issue.

  • Check the power adapter: Make sure that the power adapter is functioning properly by testing it on another device or testing another adapter on your Pavilion 15-cx laptop.
  • Check the power port: Check the power port of your laptop for any signs of damage or wear and tear. If it is damaged, it may need to be replaced.
  • Check the battery: Make sure the battery is properly seated in its compartment and that it is not damaged or corroded.
  • Reset the laptop: Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery. Press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds, then reattach the battery and power adapter and try to turn on the laptop.
  • Update the BIOS: Updating the BIOS firmware can sometimes resolve power-related issues. Go to the HP support website, locate your laptop model, and download the latest BIOS update.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
