I understand and respect your personal decision. However a capacitor can burn out on any number of devices and cause (non-fatal)  failure. Case in point-about 5 years ago my central AC unit died on me. Fearing I would have to replace it I called repair service. Repairman diagnosed- blown capacitor. He replaced it and the unit came back to life and no repeat failures.

Put the Spectre up for bid on Ebay. May get more than you think. Let me know if you do. :generic:

Good anology, I usually test my AC capacitors every 5 years or so. When they weaken I replace both. The point is they last 5 years or  I would consider them faulty and not buy that brand again. I keep a pair in reserve all the time, just in case.....If my home AC went out after 29 months I'd be calling the manufacturer, not a repairman.  My AC is 13 years old, I clean it each year and service the filter regularly. When I installed it (myself) I made sure I bought the best unit with the best reputation for longevity and I've had a good return on my money.  When the heatpump switch over valve failed after 2 weeks I called the manufacturer and they sent out a rep and replaced the valve. I've had no problems since then.

The Spectre has cost me $50 per month to use, I can a lease unit for less than that.... Bad design with no company responsibilty is not something I can recomend to someone else.  After reading a large number of posts about the failure of the capacitor on these units I'm surprised  that HP refuses to simply repair or replace the motherboard. Clearly they are a design turkey, so I for one will not buy another higher dollar HP unit when other brands offer the same features at less than 1/2 the price. If I had paid $650 for the unit, then I would have just chucked it and thought of it like a transistor radio of the 60's.

I have the same problem.  HP Spectre 13-4105dx not taking a charge.  Looks like a known issue.  I have 2 of these.  Both AC adapters work.  Just one computer no longer taking charge.  I think HP should step up and fix as this computer is about 26 months old.  Lot of money for a known issue.
