I have a problem with my laptop since a couple of weeks. I don't think this correlates with a SW update, but it could have.
Here is the symptom: When I plug in the charger 3 things can happen. First the battery icon will show the power plug and after about 5 seconds it either a) goes away and is back on battery or b) has power icon but says not charging or c) works normally - power + charging laptop.
My power adapter is 150W and can run the laptop + charge the battery. The latop seems to have a mind of its own, sometimes charging the battery and sometimes not accepting power at all. It seems random but unplugging and plugging back in does not fix the problem.
When I turn off the computer it charges the battery always.
I have a second 150W charger as I thought its the power adapter but it has the same problem.
I did the reset (holding power for 15sec). I ran the diagnostic tools. They have interesting results. The battery test always passes. For the adapter, if I test right after plugging in it passes. If I test by plugging in, then waiting 5 sec I get different results. On one charger it says the power is cut due to possible overload. On the other charger it says the smart adapter data is wrong/corrupt (brand new charger). Both I believe to be bogus messages as the laptop works sometimes with the adapters but often not at all.
I wondered if there is some loose connection possibly with the power connector of the laptop but wiggling the power plug when plugged in does not change anything. Sometimes when moving the cable though (from the power adapter that holds the 20V) I get a state change from "not charging" to "charging". Moving the cable, really? I don't believe the cable is broken (second charger I bought to verify things and it has the same problems though I did not try wiggeling the cables with it).
I wonder if anyone has any more ideas. Did SW updates as well yada yada. Seems this smart adapter stuff from HP is broken (design flaw) given how many other people have problems with it. It is confusing though why it worked for almost a year and then breaks out of the blue.

I recommend you update the BIOS from the below link and check whether the issue is resolved.

If you continue facing the issue, I recommend you follow the below steps and check.
Reinstalled Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery under device manager.
Here is how you do it.
Step 1: Click the Windows “Start” button and right-click “Computer.”
Step 2: Click “Manage,” then “Device Manager.”
Step 3: Click the “Batteries” section. A list of devices will appear.
Step 4: Right-click the “Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery” device and click “Uninstall.”
Step 5: Click the “Action” menu item and “Scan for Hardware Changes” to reinstall the driver.
