Common problems for Battery
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about: Battery Reports, Hold a charge, Test and Calibrating Battery . Check out this link: Is your notebook plugged in and not charging?
HP Recommended

I have an HP Pavillion 17 and just replaced the battery with an HP/OEM battery. It is not charging so I ran diagnostics and it turns out it shows the battery but doesn't find the power pack. Not recognizing the power pack it cannot charge the battery. I have tried the original power pack, I have 3 other HPs I tried power pack and just bought a new one (HP Brand) and it still doesn't find it..

Any help appreciated

It would help in a big way to have the system SKU of your laptop.

If you can, boot to Windows.

In the search box type in msinfo and click on the system information app above.

In the list that appears in the system information dialogue window, look for System SKU.

Post it in your next reply to your thread.

Thanks

Thank you.

Does the laptop work with the power adapter connector plugged in?

Did you carefully inspect the header on the system board where the battery connector plugs in?

The laptop works with the power pack. However, if I hit F2 and run diagnostics it shows

The smart adapter feature failed to return valid data

When I ran the  test for the battery in the past it would tell me it was drained. Today it says
Battery Check: Primary - Replace (49)

Primary Logic State - Not Available (49), Charge State - Not Available

Failure ID: 6E6K8X-BANABL8-MFPURF-COBW03

Charge capacity 100%

Status: Unknown (49)

Battery Age: 159 days

Full Charge Capacity 3600mAh

AC Power: Yes

I have checked the battery connection and had another person who does this more check and install again. When I first bought the battery and I installed it the computer showed battery at 84%. and ran the computer while at friends after he installed. I didn't notice it didn't show not charging. I did not shut down computer and the battery lost power and now is at 0% and I cannot get to charge.

Are you familiar with removing the Microsoft AC adapter and Microsoft Compliant Control method battery devices in the device manager?

Remove them while logged into Windows and then click on the Action tab above and click on scan for hardware changes.

If the issue is not a hardware failure, when the OS installs the device  and appropriate drivers, your laptop should start charging again.

If it is a hardware failure, the issue is a failed component or trace on the system board.

I would open the laptop and take a close look at the traces where the dc power in plugs into the system board.

That section of the board is also where battery sense and charge takes place.

I have done uninstall and reinstall a few times. This has not done anything that helps. There are a few times when pulling battery (I think once with new power pack too) and installing again the initial booting says wrong cmos  but it seems corrected next time I reboot. I have used microsoft and 3rd party software to see if there is a driver update too.

I just tried uninstall and rebooting to reinstall . When I go to device manager and right click it shows working properly.

In this case I believe that you have a hardware issue.

The device that is used to plug in and charge the battery is called a power adapter.

I just got a brand new HP brand power pack that matches the part number on the one that came with computer hoping it would be something so simple. I also have an HP Envy with same size adapter that is 90W instead of 45W that I plugged in to see if it would recognize that one since it works with my Envy and no luck. My partner has an HP laptop with same 4.5mm  plug and is 65W which did not do anything for charging either.

I appreciate all your time and assistance
