Hp Probook 440 g4
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi. We recently bought several Probook 440s for our school. We deployed our windows 10 image on most of the pc's, and every bit of hardware was working until we bought some usb-c elite docking stations. These are not recognised thru the usb-c port, but works with the supplied usb-adapter.

I've tried to download most of the drivers from hp support site and installed these, including chipset drivers and docking station drivers. I would think the chipset drivers were the correct drivers for this, but nothing changed after installing them. I have no exclamation marks in device manager.

Can anyone please tell which drivers I need to get usb-c working?

Thanks.

What is the brand and model of the USB-c elite docking stations that you purchased?

As far as I am aware, USB-type C is so new that there are only a few types of adapters that will work with it. Manufacturers are still struggling with the implementation of some the new features.

A  USB type c to HDMI adapter will work. A  USB type-C to USB 2.0 adapter will work. I have both of those and they work with my current product loan HP Envy Spectre 13-v021nd ultrabook. There is a special power adapter for the Spectre 13 which uses any of the USB type-C ports to charge the notebook's battery.

Sorry if I was unclear. This is a HP Elite USB-C docking, with HDMI out and displayport out (displaylink graphics interface), and should be compatible with this laptop. We have it working on one pc that has the default hp image, but I can't figure out which driver that has which the others haven't. We do prefer to install OS from MDT with all apps and settings set.

That should be a matter of comparing the drivers that are used in one of the ones that do not operate as expected as compared to the one that does work.

You have access to that and we do not.

At the command line type in "driverquery" and press enter.  You can also add the switch /v for a verbose list. That will invoke a list of all installed drivers. That command works on just about every version of Windows. It can also be used in PowerShell.

I hope you find that helpful.

We took another look at the "working" pc, and it wasn't working as much as we thought anyway. It did recognise a removable disk when you connect the usb-c port, but not the drive with the driver on (which you get if you connect the type a adapter). Nothing else works if we connect directly to the usb-c port of the PB 440 G4.

I called HP support about this, and the guy there said this docking does have no support for the 440 G4, so I guess it was advertised as something it isn't. I am a bit disappointed about this usb-c chaos, though. Should probably just buy elitebooks or thinkpads with conventional docking connectors.

"Should probably just buy elitebooks or thinkpads with conventional docking connectors."

That sounds like a wise choice.

I also have a 440 G4 and when trying to connect a Moshi USB-C to HDMI adapter, it tells me that "usb device malfunction" or something like that, basically it's not recognizing it. I can use this adapter to hook my MacBook Pro to the 4K screen just fine.

The reply I got from Moshi support (when asking if there is a Win 10 driver available) was if "the USB-C port on my laptop supports video connections. So I am asking this here, on the forum.

We've been using the HP Elite USB -C Docking Station (Model # X7W54UT) for a while now with ProBook 440 Laptops and now the new ones we recently ordered do not work, so we'll have to return them unless this issue was resolved.  Has it?

Thanks in advance.
