Common problems for Battery

I’m having a problem with the ELAN Precision Touchpad on my HP Omen 16-c0021nl.

The touchpad works perfectly right after boot, but after about 30–60 seconds it starts lagging. The cursor movement becomes not smooth, scrolling is inconsistent, and sometimes clicks are not properly detected.

Important detail:
The touchpad does not completely freeze, it just becomes very imprecise and laggy.

If I go to Device Manager and disable/re-enable the ELAN Input device, it immediately starts working perfectly again, but after a short time the problem comes back.

Things I have already tried:

Updated Windows to the latest version

Installed the latest drivers from HP

Uninstalled and reinstalled the touchpad device multiple times

Restarted the system several times

Checked power settings

None of these solved the issue.

Since the touchpad works perfectly right after startup, I suspect this might be a software, firmware, or power-management related problem, possibly related to the ELAN driver or I²C communication.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue on HP Omen laptops with ELAN touchpads?
Is there any known fix, driver version, or BIOS setting that could resolve this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi @Vitto88,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I Understand your concern about the touchpad and the system lagging, don’t worry let me help you with this.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Does the lag happen only when the notebook is on battery, or also when plugged in?
  • Have you noticed if the issue starts after opening a specific application, or does it occur regardless of what you’re doing?
  • Do you have any external pointing devices (like a USB mouse) connected when this happens?

In the meantime, here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Disable Touchpad Power Management
    • Open Device Manager → expand Human Interface Devices.
    • Right-click the ELAN Input Device → Properties → Power Management.
    • Uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”
  2. Check BIOS Settings
    • Restart your notebook and enter BIOS (usually by pressing Esc or F10 at startup).
    • Look for touchpad or pointing device settings sometimes switching between “Advanced” and “Basic” modes can stabilize performance.
  3. Update BIOS & Chipset Drivers
    • Visit the HP Support website  https://support.hp.com/ for your Omen 16-c0021nl and ensure the BIOS and chipset drivers are fully up to date. These updates often resolve communication issues that affect touchpads.
  4. Windows Precision Settings
    • Go to Settings → Devices → Touchpad.
    • Reset touchpad settings to default, then reconfigure gestures. This can clear conflicts introduced by custom settings.

I hope this helps.

Hi @Vitto88,

Thanks for your response.

I completely understand how  it must feel to have tried multiple steps and still be stuck with the touchpad issue. Thank you for your patience and persistence  let’s go a bit deeper with some additional troubleshooting that can sometimes resolve ELAN touchpad problems on Omen notebooks:

  • Reinstall the Touchpad Driver
    • Open Device Manager → expand Mice and other pointing devices.
    • Right-click the ELAN touchpad → Uninstall device.
    • Restart your notebook — Windows will automatically reinstall the driver.
    • If the issue persists, download the latest ELAN driver directly from the HP Support page for your model.
  • Check Windows Updates
    • Go to Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update.
    • Install all pending updates, especially optional driver updates, which may include touchpad fixes.
  • Run HP Hardware Diagnostics
    • Restart your notebook and press Esc repeatedly, then F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
    • Run the Component Test → Input Devices to check if the touchpad hardware is functioning correctly.
  • Disable Fast Startup
    • Sometimes Windows Fast Startup interferes with device initialization.
    • Go to Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do.
    • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable → uncheck Turn on fast startup.
    • Save changes and restart.
  • Create a New User Profile
  • Occasionally, corrupted user settings cause lag.
  • Create a new Windows user account and test the touchpad there to see if the issue persists.

I hope this helps.

Hi @Vitto88,

Thanks for your response.

I truly understand how this must be for you especially since you’ve already tried all the recommended steps like updating drivers, reinstalling Windows, and even running diagnostics. The fact that the touchpad works fine under Linux but not consistently in Windows does point to a compatibility issue.

Since the issue persists despite all the troubleshooting, the best next step would be to have your notebook checked directly by our HP service team. They’ll be able to run deeper hardware and firmware-level diagnostics and ensure the right drivers or updates are applied specifically for your model. If you’re finding it difficult to resolve this on your own, I’d recommend reaching out to your nearest HP service center for hands-on support.

To ensure your device receives the appropriate care, we recommend visiting an authorized HP service center. Our certified technicians can provide a thorough diagnosis and offer the best solutions to address the issue.
