I have an old notebook from 2009, an HP G42 230BR with motherboard Part Number: 595184-001, DDR3, HM55. I want to upgrade the processor. It has an original Intel Core i3 M 350 processor and I want to install an Intel Core i7 640M, both first generation. I need to be absolutely sure that it is compatible with my notebook. Is it compatible?

Below is the link to the service manual which has the list of processors HP offered in the model series.
Compaq Presario CQ42 Notebook PC and HP G42 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide
HP offered the i7-620M processor as the best one.
I don't see any reason why the i7-640M wouldn't work.
Here's a video where someone installed the i7-640M in a HP G42-373TU (model sold in Asia and Australia).
