I have an old notebook from 2009, an HP G42 230BR with motherboard Part Number: 595184-001, DDR3, HM55. I want to upgrade the processor. It has an original Intel Core i3 M 350 processor and I want to install an Intel Core i7 640M, both first generation. I need to be absolutely sure that it is compatible with my notebook. Is it compatible?

Below is the link to the service manual which has the list of processors HP offered in the model series.
Compaq Presario CQ42 Notebook PC and HP G42 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide
HP offered the i7-620M processor as the best one.
I don't see any reason why the i7-640M wouldn't work.
Here's a video where someone installed the i7-640M in a HP G42-373TU (model sold in Asia and Australia).

Hi!
@Airton, I already had this notebook and made this same upgrade, using an i7-640M. It worked fine.
I also added 8gb of RAM and a 256 gb SSD (SATA). I recommend both.
For doubts or more details, please write back.

The strange thing is that I installed this Intel Core i7 640M processor and my notebook's motherboard no longer works. After I performed all the procedures to remove power from the notebook and remove static electricity from my body, I used gloves to change the processor and also an anti-static wrist strap. I closed the notebook and when I connected the power cable, I heard a noise... Like a "tissss". I believe the motherboard burned out, because the power light no longer comes on, it only makes a low noise, like a "Tiz, tiz, tiz, tiz" every few seconds.

Hi!
You'll need to disassembly all the notebook to have access to the motherboard.
At this point, it will be only unlock and replace the old w/ the new one .
There are several videos in youtube showing how to perform it.
Good Luck
