HP 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-c0000 (2W0J5AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

So, i am wondering if I can upgrade the memory in this laptop from 8GB to 16GB. I've looked for hours to try and get a definitive answer, but nothing concrete. So, does the 883C motherboard in this laptop support 16GB (or 32GB maybe?)

Thanks for any responses in advanced!

@ScootMeister72,

According to the part number (2W0J5AV) you provided, HP PartSurfer classified it as an "HP 17.3 INCH LAPTOP PC 17-CN0008CA".  You also mentioned that your laptop has an HP 883C motherboard. Combining this information, here are two 8GB RAM options I believe are compatible with your laptop, which as far as I can tell, has two RAM slots to allow 2 x 8GB RAM sticks.  Information is indeed difficult to come by. Please confirm what current RAM is installed.

Such as through the freeware utility tool "Speccy", to be downloaded here: Speccy - Free Download (ccleaner.com).  Install and click on Ram and the little blue triangle immediately to the left of "Slot":

Please confirm what the Part Number is of your current RAM, and the number of slots.

Anyway, here are two RAM options which appear to be most used by HP Laptop 17-cn0xxx Users:

1.) M471A1K43DB1-CWE Samsung 8GB DDR4 SODIMM PC4-25600 3200MHz CL22 1.2V 260-Pin, such as here: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-3200MHz-PC4-25600-Notebook-M471A1K43DB1-CWE/dp/B08QRGV7C6/ref=sr_1_9_....

 2.) HMA81GS6DJR8N-XN Hynix 8GB DDR4 SODIMM PC4-25600 3200MHz CL22 1.2V 260-pin, such as here: https://www.amazon.com/Hynix-PC4-25600-3200MHz-260-pin-SO-DIMM/dp/B0898NRLXR/ref=sr_1_4?crid=238028W....

Here is an example of an HP Laptop 17-cn0xxx with your motherboard with the Hynix RAM: HP Laptop 17-cn0xxx Performance Results - UserBenchmark.

Hope this helps.

Your Service Manual is here- http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c07790305.pdf  But for some reason they don't illustrate the memory modules.

If you can get the complete Model Number, look at the spec sheet here- http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c07790305.pdf

Also you can go here https://www.crucial.com/store/crucial-advisor-trust  and look up compatible ram for your laptop.

Alternatively, Windows users can determine the maximum RAM capacity in the Command prompt (Run as Administer) with the command here- "wmic memphysical get MaxCapacity" without the quotes and divide the value by 1024 That will give you the total amount supported by your laptop. This the definitive way to see how much your laptop can use.

Be advised that HP likes memory with relaxed timings, like the vanilla Crucial modules, or Samsung, SK Hynix modules work well. Don't buy any modules labeled as Performance ram, as there are no adjustments you can make in bios for timings.

Appreciate the reply!

Additional Info:

On the bottom of the laptop, it says; HP :Laptop: 17-cn0023dx

Ran the get MaxCapacity command during my search for info...said 32GB. (Hence my confusion)

I bought this laptop from BestBuy a few weeks ago, so not sure if HP configures laptops based off of who they are supplying them to. Currently, it has 2 x 4GB, SK Hynix, Part #  HMA851S6DJR6N-XN

Because im impatient, i went ahead and ordered the following. Been at least 10 yrs since ive dove into the computer upgrade pool 🙂 Thoughts on this memory?

@ScootMeister72,

It may work.  Since you ordered this RAM, install it and see if it runs at 3200 MHz.

Let's go from there -keep me informed if you don't mind.

Kind Regards.

As promised, its Tuesday. Received the 2 x 8GB sticks when I got home from work. Popped the laptop open, swapped out memory and started up. Everything seems to be in working order. No errors, no hickups (knock on wood).

Appreciate the help!
