This is what the Maintenance and Service Guide says:
Memory Two SODIMM slots - customer non-accessible/non-upgradeable
DDR4-2666 Dual Channel Support
Supports up to 8 GB max system memory
8 GB (8 GB × 1)
12 GB (8 GB × 1 + 4 GB × 1)
16 GB (8 GB × 2)
I read the if it 'consumer non-accessible/non-upgradeable', that's just because there isn't a separate 'door' for the RAM slots.
I need 16gb of RAM, but it comes with one stick of 8gb. I should be able to put another 8gb stick in the without any issues right? It does say 'Supports up to 8 GB max system memory', but underneath that it says 16 GB (8 GB × 2).
Thanks in advance!

Hi:
I can't find the manual you are referring to.
But what you are writing is correct.
If it indicates the memory is not onboard, and that there are two memory slots, HP doesn't want customers doing the work themselves because it isn't 'easy' to take the notebook apart to add memory, or upgrade the hard drive.

Thanks for your response!
You can only find the manual by going to support.hp.com then selecting the computer model > Manuals > Maintenance and Service Guide. Here it is: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06325755
When they say 'Supports up to 8 GB max system memory', do they mean 8GB per slot then? As beneath that it says:
8 GB (8 GB × 1)
12 GB (8 GB × 1 + 4 GB × 1)
16 GB (8 GB × 2)
Suggesting 8 GB x 2 is also an option.

You're very welcome.
Yes, that is the manual that I found earlier, but it doesn't show the processor your model has, so I was thinking you had a different one.

It is very confusing...it says it has two memory slots but can only take a max of 8 GB?
That makes no sense since one slot can take an 8 GB memory module.
But I see this listed under that section...
Supports up to 8 GB max system memory
4 GB (4 GB × 1)
6 GB (2 GB × 1 + 4 GB × 1)
8 GB (8 GB × 1)
What page do you see the:
8 GB (8 GB × 1)
12 GB (8 GB × 1 + 4 GB × 1)
16 GB (8 GB × 2)
Yes, if you see that information listed, it supports 16 GB of memory.

The model you're looking at is the 15-bc551nd. The model I'm talking about is the 15-bc553nd. A difference of one number.
I linked to the manual above. On page 8 (16th page in reality) it says:
Supports up to 8 GB max system memory
8 GB (8 GB × 1)
12 GB (8 GB × 1 + 4 GB × 1)
16 GB (8 GB × 2)
It is all very confusing indeed. That's why I started this topic.
It says it has 2 slots and list 16 GB (8 GB x 2) -as an option?-, but do say it supports up to 8 GB max system memory.

So.
DId you manage to install it?
I'm about to buy a 15-bc551nd and there is nothing to be found about upgrading ram here as well. Doesn't look like it's physically possible easily if I look at the pictures of the bottom of the laptop either..
So.. curious how it turned out for you 😄
