There is a reason. The Manual does not list what you CAN do it only lists the ways HP sold it. HP did not offer an option to configure it with 24 gigs but it will work. However, as I said you will not have dual channel operation. It does not make a huge difference but for most people a matched pair of 8 gig modules for 16 total will perform as well as an 8 and a 16 for 24 total.

If you are asking if you can mix an 8 gig and a 16 gig module in the laptop the answer is yes. But its generally more effective to install identical modules if possible or at least modules with the same specifications including size (gb) speed, latency and density. One reason is to be sure the memory runs in dual channel mode. The laptop uses DDR4-2666 So-DIMM. If you need more help post back.
