@Gazork

It has two memory module slots (7th and 8th generation Intel Core processors):
Memory is non-customer accessible/non-upgradeable
DDR4-2400 dual channel support (8th generation Intel processors)
DDR4-2133 dual channel support (7th generation Intel processors)
Supports up to 16 GB of system RAM in the following configurations:

● 16384 MB (8192 MB×2)

● 12288 MB (8192 MB×1 + 4096 MB×1)

● 8192 MB (8192 MB×1)

● 4096 MB (4096 MB×1)

Your machine has the last option.

Regards.

Hi,

Your notebook has two slots as stated by @banhien and will support max 32GB of DDR4 2400Mhz RAM (2x16GB)  even if 16GB is mentioned in service manual.

At the moment you have one 4GB stick and one empty slot. So you could add another 4GB stick in the empty slot which should give a performance boost. You can purchase from your preferred brand such as Crucial, Samsung...

On page 40 of service manual you can see the steps to upgrade RAM:

Hope it helps,

David

At the moment I have 8 gig of ram as delivered. I have received conflicting information, but yours seems least valid.

I have not opened up the unit, but Best Buy said 16 gig was max and only one slot - HP says 16 gig max and two slots with 8 gig in one slot - Iknow if yuo put (2) 16 gig chips in each slot and the unit will not support 32 gig, it will not recognize the second chip and will simply run on 16 gig.

I'm getting ready to expand the memory and need to know if the MB has 1 or 2 slots - 1 means I need 16 gig x 1 - 2 means I can use 8 gig x 2 or 16 gig x 1 - I don't need 32 gig.

Thanks, but have you cracked the case and made the upgrade?

My machine currently has 8 gig of ram - I believe 8 x 1 - I want to upgrade to 16 gig - I am trying to predetermine if I need 8 x2 oe 16 x 1

OK. Good luck!!

I was going to leave it at that. Have you followed any of the links or info I provided above??

Here is your model  17-by0053od spec page:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-17-by0000-laptop-pc/20395856/model/22666138/document/c060710...

So, it has a i3-8130U CPU. Now if you go to page 2 of service manualyou can read:

Two memory module slots (7th and 8th generation Intel Core processors) with support for 16GB (2x8GB)

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06148960

However having been here for quite a long time and seeing what many users have upgraded to we have seen that HP DDR4 notebooks  will run with 32GB of RAM (even if you do not need it)

I believe the info is quite clear. However, since you believe it is least valid. Good luck and so long!!!

No problem.

It is basically the same upgrade. The 17-by0021dx has two slots and comes with one 8GB stick and one empty slot.

Spec page:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-17-by0000-laptop-pc/20395856/model/23474994/document/c061528...

So you can add a 8GB DDR4 2400Mhz in the empty slot (naturally if you do not believe it has two slots you can always remove the bottom cover as seen on page 37 of the service manual and take a look)

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06148960

Your notebook will support max 32GB of DDR4 2400Mhz RAM (2x16GB). Another upgrade I would perform which would greatly improve the performance of the notebook (more thank an extra 8GB of RAM) would be to install a M2 PCIe NVMe SSD.

Hope it helps,

David

Thank you - this affirms my determination after reading all the literature that I could find about the subject. I was hoping to find someone who had opened the unit and made the upgrade, but I have already purchased an 8 gig  memory module and will open the device soon - I will post my findings then.
