Common problems for Battery
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about: Battery Reports, Hold a charge, Test and Calibrating Battery . Check out this link: Is your notebook plugged in and not charging?
HP Recommended

I just bought an HP elitebook laptop refurbished. I plugged it in to charge and then when I turned it on, the battery was at 99%. Then I used it unplugged for about 2 hours, and the battery remained at 99%, so I realised that there was an issue. I turned off the laptop, and when I tried to turn it on, nothing happened. It will not turn on unless it is plugged in. When I turned it on, it said 54%. While it is has been charging for hours, it still says 54%. After running a battery test from the startup menu, it said

Battery Check : Primary - Calibration Required

Primary: Logic State - Calibration Required , Charge State - OK

Component Test : FAILED

And then there was just "Back to the main menu" or "Battery Details".

Basically, the computer seems to be unable to read the actual battery, even though the actual battery hardware is in good condition. How do I recalibrate the battery if I can't see what percentage it's on and it won't turn on unless plugged in? Can anyone help? Thanks

Hi @heoun,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand that the battery percentage remained at 99% while the laptop was being used, and after shutting down, the notebook would not power on without the AC adapter. The HP Hardware Diagnostics result showing “Primary – Calibration Required” and “Component Test: FAILED” is important here.

Before attempting a manual calibration, I recommend running HP's battery calibration from the UEFI Hardware Diagnostics:

  1. Shut down the notebook.
  2. Connect the AC adapter.
  3. Turn it on and repeatedly press Esc until the Startup Menu appears.
  4. Press F2 for System Diagnostics.
  5. Select Component Tests > Power > Battery Check.
  6. If calibration is offered, select it and follow the on-screen instructions.
  7. Keep the AC adapter connected when instructed to charge the battery.
  8. Allow the calibration process to complete without interrupting it.

You may refer to the following document for assistance:

However, there is an important distinction in your case: “Calibration Required” does not by itself confirm that the battery hardware is good. Since the diagnostic also reports “Component Test: FAILED” and the notebook will not power on from the battery, the battery, its connection, or the charging/power circuitry may require further investigation.

If the battery check cannot complete the calibration or returns Failed again, please record the complete 24-digit Failure ID shown by HP Diagnostics. Since the laptop is refurbished, I would also recommend contacting the seller/refurbisher before opening the laptop or replacing the battery, particularly if it is covered by their warranty.

Take care, and stay fantastic!

Best regards,
