HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j109tx Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR)

Hello,

Our HP Envy 15j109tx had reported Hard Disk Error 301 few days back. We have changed the Hard Disk.
We ran the Recovery Software for 3-4 hrs thru the Recovery Disks (3 of them) that came with the laptop from HP.
We also ran Supplementary Disk.

After that on power on, getting the msg
****
The recovery attempt has failed. Select one of the following buttons.
"Save Log" or "Details" or "Retry".
****

Under "Details", it has the following text in the error msg in file name: CTOERROR.flg
*****
CTO Error condition has been dtected in [Factory Update] phase

Found some error at QFE Offline installation...
Check C:\System.sav\Logs\BBFind4QFE.LOG to see which QFE got the issue...
Check C:\System.sav\Logs\QFEOff\KBxxxxx.log.txt to see the detail...
*****

Any suggestions how to resolve this and get the laptop into working condition?
Already, getting impacted w/o the laptop.

Thanks,
Anant

Hi, Anant:

The only suggestion I can offer would be to clean install W8.1 by making your own W8.1 installation media.

Download the plain W8.1 64-bit ISO file from the link below.

Download Windows 8.1 Disc Image (ISO File) (microsoft.com)

Use the free Rufus utility to transfer the ISO file to a USB flash drive so that it is bootable.

Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way

Set up the Rufus menu exactly as you see it in the illustration for Windows PC's.

Boot the notebook from the USB flash drive.

You do that by turning on the notebook.  Immediately press/tap the ESC key to get the menu of options.

Select the F9 boot options menu and from that, select the EFI USB flash drive created by Rufus and press the Enter key

After you install W8.1 you can install the drivers and available software from your notebook's support page.

Paul,

I re-ran the Recovery Manager and all went OK and got the final screen "Recovery is completed" (took 6hrs).

The next step was "click Finish to restart the computer now".

The next screen was about Regional Settings/Keyboard Layout. I selected "India" for all the settings.

But in the next screen got BSOD with SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED.

The system gave couple of options to Refresh / Repair / Reinstall etc. I have currently opted for "Refresh" which is currently going on if this would do any cleanup?

Thanks,
Anant

Providing the list of Actions/Errors to the last Step I had mentioned:

- Error: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
- Action: Did Refresh
- Error: The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed To install Windows, click ok to restart the computer, and then restart installation
- Action: Clicked on "restart the computer"
- Error: Undoing Changes
- Choose an option: Exit and continue to Windows 8.1 / Use a device (USB drive, network connection or windows recovery DVD) / Troubleshoot (Refresh or Reset your PC or use advanced tools) / Turn off your PC
- Action: Exit and continue to Windows 8.1
- Error: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
- Error: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
- Preparing to refresh PC
- Error: Recovery: See advanced repair options (Refresh / Reset / Restore) / Restart my PC
- Action: Restart my PC
- Error: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
- Action: See advanced repair options
- Action: Turn off your PC

So any idea/suggestion what needs to be done next? PC is resting now.

Thanks,
Anant

You're very welcome, Anant.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to help you with any problems you are experiencing with the recovery process.

If it doesn't work, then the information I provided will allow you to use your notebook again.

Cheers,

Paul

Paul and Others,

Here's the progress that I have been able to make so far:
1. Restarted the laptop yesterday morning with Recovery Disk again (Another 5hrs)
2. Got "Recovery is Complete"
3. Click Finish to restart the computer
4. Windows Setup progressed: with Region and Language Screen, followed by Computer Name, then Email id and the next screen took to WiFi connection. This time I skipped entering Email ID and Wifi Connection. Didn't encounter Error: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
5. But the system reported windows doesn't seem to be installed
6. I just thought of connecting the laptop to Ethernet Cable and then system started Setting up.
7. On first successful reboot, checked for Windows Updates
8. There have been 165 Updates which were downloaded and then got installed (another 5hrs). No wonder, it is a 10-years old laptop (bought on 3rd Mar 2014), so it was obvious to have that many Updates.
9. Restarted the laptop after updates
10. Checked for HP Updates, if any
11. Enabled Windows Defender
12. Ran Windows Update once more
Now it shows One Update to be installed but its installation is failing.
>> Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 for Windows 8.1 for x64 (KB4486105) - Error Code 80071A90

No success so far?
13. Other issues to be resolved:
- don't see Office Apps: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook. Generally, their trial versions are loaded?
- McAfee Pop-Up keeps coming since it's trial version would have expired? Need to disable it?

Besides, need to do the following:
1. Upgrade to Windows 10
2. Activate Microsoft Office (not sure if my current Windows 360 Subscription would count this activation as another new device. If so, would like to explore how to avoid that)
3. Install other apps: Whatsapp

Thanks,
Anant

Hi, Anant:

You can uninstall McAfee.

You can only upgrade to W10 if it had been previously installed and activated on your notebook.

Microsoft closed the loophole that allowed for free upgrades beyond the July 2016 free upgrade period, last September.

Unfortunately, I can't help you with the rest...office and whatnot.

OK, made quite a bit of progress:

- Installed Office 365
- Uninstalled "McAfee Livesafe Internet Security"
- Upgraded to Windows 10 (by downloading Windows 10 installation media)

Got following messages and not sure what to do and what impact I would experience:

1. Intel® Smart Connect Technology is not available. Removed from PC
2. HP Documentation is not available. Removed from PC
3. HP 3D DriveGuard is not available. Removed from PC

Besides, on running, "HP Support Assistant" getting "Program Compatibility Assistant error."

- Standard Warranty end date: unknown

Should have extracted Actual Start and End date. There is option to send this msg to HP but not sure if it is really going to HP Team?

Hi, Anant:

Your notebook has been out of warranty for many years now, so I wouldn't see any reason to waste any time trying to get that fixed.

This is a peer-to-peer forum, and we don't work for or represent HP, so you would have to contact HP customer service starting at the link below to have a problem like that corrected.

Contact HP | HP® India

Since your notebook is out of warranty, most likely you will be charged to fix the problem.

The HP support assistant program is not necessary and you may want to uninstall it.

If you want; you can install a newer version of the HPSA software at the link below:

HP Support Assistant

8.7.50.3

Paul,

I installed HP Support Assistant 8. It deleted (overwrite on) the older version. But the new version doesn't even show the GUI.

HPSA used to help in checking Health of PC and its components in User friendly manner instead of going thru Fn Keys?

Thanks,
Anant
