HP Pavilion notebook 17.3 f115DX
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I have a HP Pavilion notebook 17.3 f115DX with a defective wifi module. Is there a replacement available that operates at 2.4 and 5.0 gigahertz?  My original when it was working operated at 2.4 only.

That sounds like a good idea.

I didn't know you could miracast with the RTL8188EE card.

The card is cheap enough.

You may even want to go with the bluetooth version...should also miracast as well.  It is basically the 8188EE with bluetooth.

Hi:

Does the wifi adapter in there now have one or two antenna cables connected to it?

You cannot upgrade to a dual band wifi adapter unless the notebook has two antenna cables.

The reason I ask is because around the time your notebook came out, HP started using only one antenna cable on single band wifi cards.

The service manual shows two in the illustration, but that is because some models in the 17-f notebook series do come with dual band wifi cards.

Unfortunately, it is pretty hard to get to where the wifi card is located to check the antenna situation.

Chapter 6 of the service manual provides the wifi card R & R procedures.

Please post back if your notebook has two antenna cables, and I will give you a recomendation for a suitable AC wifi card.

Hi Paul,

Thank you for the quick response.  I will have to open up my laptop and see if there are one or two antenna cables connected.  At present I'm using an adapter in the USB port for my wifi 2.4 and 5.0.  This works well but Miracast will not work.  Before the card went bad I could use my Microsoft Display Adapter and now I can not.  That is why I would like to replace the internal module although  I guess the problem could be the antenna or antennas.

When  the  card did work and Microsoft Display Adapter was on there was some conflict being on the wed and casting the Laptop screen to the TV.

You're very welcome.

You should not be seeing a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter listed under the display adapters device manager category.

You should be seeing an Intel HD graphics adapter listed there.

If you are not seeing an Intel HD graphics adapter listed under the display adapters device manager category, then you need to install the W8.1 Intel graphics driver from your notebook's support page.

Yes, you do need a wifi adapter that supports WiDi or Miracast in order to screen mirror your notebook to the TV.

I don't know of any USB wifi adapters that can do that.

Thanks Paul,

I do see the Intel HD graphics adapter under display adapters.

The Microsoft Display Adapter I was referring to plugs into my TV HDMI port and uses Miracast.  The Miracast funtion on my HP Notebook stopped working at the same time my internal wifi started to act up. That is why I want to replace the internal wifi card,

It is going to take me a few days to get the time to open my HP Notebook and see if there are one or two antennas.  I'll be in touch.

You're very welcome.

OK that's good.

I was confused because when the display adapter is missing a driver, that is what it is called in W8 and newer...a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.

On W7, Vista and XP, it was called a Standard VGA Adapter when the graphics driver was not installed.

I hope that your notebook was old enough to still have the two antennas on the single band wifi cards.

Paul,

I opened up my laptop and found only one antenna for wifi. The part number of the wifi card is HP 709505-001.

Maybe I will replace it with the same part number card so I can use Miracast again and keep using my Edimax USB wifi adapter which works very good at 2.4 and 5.0 gigahertz.

Looks like Actiontec makes a USB Miracast Transmitter but they advertise it only works with their receiver.  It may not work with my  HDMI Microsoft Display Adapter so I'm undecided which path to take, replace card or buy Actiontec.

Thanks all for the help.

Paul,

I will try the 753077-005 with bluetooth.

I'll let you know how it works out.

Paul.

As you suggested I replaced my bad wifi card with a new 753077-005 card and it fixed the problem.   Miacast is now working.  Thank you for solving this problem for me.

I turned on the new Bluetooh function and it hunts but does not find any devices and  my  phone does not see the laptop.  The laptop says the bluetooh is workimg and that all the drivers are up to date.
