My battery died so I purchased a new one. I removed the old battery, did a hard reset, and installed the new one. After powering up, I get a screen that says the capacity of the battery has been reduced (error 601). After I hit return, I get another screen that says Non-HP battery detected, etc. If I hit return, go into Diagnostics, and try to calibrate the battery, I get a message that a battery is not installed.
I have tried 4 different batteries, including HP brand and the results are always the same. I feel like I'm in a catch-22 with the software.
Also, if I continue into Windows, I can unplug my adapter and the computer remains on. If I plug my adapter in, I get the orange led for a while and then it switches over to flashing white. If I try to power on with just the battery and no adapter, I get quick white led flashes and no power up.

Hi @ActionableStrat,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your laptop!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Try these steps:
1. Verify Battery Compatibility
Ensure that the replacement battery is compatible with your HP Spectre x360 Convertible Laptop. Non-genuine batteries can cause recognition and performance issues. Verify the battery part number against HP's official parts list.
2. Battery Calibration
Sometimes new batteries need calibration to work correctly. Here’s how you can calibrate your battery:
- Fully Charge the Battery: Charge your laptop to 100%.
- Discharge Completely: Use your laptop until the battery drains completely and the laptop shuts down.
- Recharge Fully Again: Charge the battery to 100% once more without interruption.
3. Update BIOS
An outdated BIOS can lead to detection issues. Update your BIOS to the latest version:
- Go to HP's Support and Drivers Page: HP Drivers & Downloads
- Enter your Laptop Model: Download and install the latest BIOS update available for your model.
4. Run HP Diagnostics Correctly
Ensure you are using the latest version of HP Diagnostics. Here’s how:
- Download HP PC Hardware Diagnostics: Available at HP Support page
- Install and Run: Follow the instructions to run a comprehensive battery test.
5. Reset Power Settings
Perform a power reset to clear any misconfigurations:
- Unplug Power Adapter: Disconnect the laptop from any power sources.
- Remove the Battery: If possible, remove the battery based on your laptop's manual. Wait for about 10-15 minutes.
- Press Power Button: Hold the power button for about 30 seconds to discharge remaining power.
- Reconnect and Start: Reinsert the battery, plug the power adapter back in, and try to start your laptop.
6. Check Power Light Indicators
Pay attention to the power light indicators:
- White Flashing Light: Typically indicates a connection issue or battery failure.
- Solid Light: Should indicate power is detected.
I hope this helps.
