HP Pavilion 17-e061ss
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi all,

A few months earlier, I wrote that I want to replace the Pentium 2020M CPU in my HP Pavilion 17-e061ss laptop. The laptop was very very slow. You can find this topic here: here . However, now I can’t answer in that topic since it’s closed, so I want to tell you here how this story ended. I hope this helps other people with a similar problem and gives a second life to their laptops.

I installed CPU  i7-3632QM in my laptop HP Pavilion 17-e061ss (which came from the factory with a CPU Pentium 2020M) and the laptop accepted it. Now it works very fast. Then I replaced the storage WD Blue HDD 500GB (Model WD5000LPVX) with Samsung EVO 860 SSD 500GB (Model MZ-76E500B/EU) and also updated the memory from 4 to 12 GB (the maximum value for this model). I also did a clean install of Windows 10 Professional (the laptop came with Windows 8.1 Home edition). Now it is a completely different machine - I got a performance increase many times! I am very happy. Thanks to everyone who helped me! I believe that installing the i7-4702MQ processor would further improve the performance of my laptop. But now someone else from this forum will tell us about this.

Thanks

Hi:

That is great news, but the service manual is incorrect regarding the memory capacity.

Here is the link to the crucial memory report, which shows that 2 x 8 GB of memory is supported in a similar model notebook as yours.  This one is sold in France.

https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/hp---compaq/pavilion-17-e061sf

You can go to 16 GB of memory (2 x 8 GB) and I recommend that you do for two reasons...

1.  The obvious increase from 12 GB to 16 GB.

2.  The less obvious reason that when you go from 12 to 16 GB of memory, it will now run in the higher performing dual channel mode, rather than the lesser performing single channel mode as it is now.

When a notebooks memory slot is empty, the memory runs in single channel mode, and when memory is installed in mismatched capacities, the memory runs in single channel mode.

OK Paul. Thank you for your help with as much memory as possible! It's a good news! So my laptop will work even faster! I will definitely do this and will come back here to report the result.

You're very welcome.

You may as well squeeze everything you can out of it.

Do you want to upgrade the wifi card to dual band?

If so, you can install this card...

Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 802.11 ac 2x2 WiFi + BT 4.0      HP Part # 710661-001

Search by the HP part number, not the model of the wifi card.

See if you can find one in used but tested and working condition on eBay.

As far as the processor...use the free utility that I zipped up and attached below to see what chipset your notebook has.

You can only install an Intel 4th gen processor if your notebook has the Intel HM86 Express Chipset.

If it has the Intel HM76 Express Chipset (which it probably does), you have to stick with a 3rd gen core processor.
